Expect Another Poor Season in CL If We Qualify
Didi left a few years ago and Sami last year, these two players were the foundation of our CL success. Rafa did well in replacing Didi with Mascher, who’s a brilliant player but not quite as good as Didi in his prime. But replacing Sami is going to be so hard. The big man was always so slow but he was strong, strong in the air, excellent organizer and above all had that one quality very few fans or pundits understand or can see - He read the game so well, that’s why in all those years his lack of pace was exposed only a handful of times.
The problem we have is that Skertel and Agger are basically not good enough to be 1st choice for LFC. Physically they are both to weak not good enough in the air and not great readers of the game. So the big problem for next year is we will need 2 proper centre halfs and a left back. I could not believe the praise given to Insua on theses boards when he made his debut and last season. He was always slow and could never cross, how did anybody ever think he would make a good player????
People think we’ve made progress, we need 3 defenders a centre mid, a left mid, a right mid and another striker?!!!

Disagree with most of it. Now you are talking if we make the top 4 this season for next years CL. the serb & torres up front, soto first choice with either of the three(JC,MS,DA) with glen at right back, midfield between maxi, gerrard, aqua, benny, lucas, masch, kuyt, babel and riera (pick 5 of them to play) & tend to agree with left back but we could always play fabio at left back but still agree with a top left back so if all fit & well im happy.

Well said. Soto is not Sami, but has definitely steadied up the back line

Im all for being honest, I appreciate a non-rose tinted opinion too, but, Your an empty head.
Mate, we got knocked out of Champions League this year by two mid table teams from Italy and France. We don't need Didi and Sami to beat teams like that.

You know, he could have sparked a good debate if he researched better and made valid points.
But clear this was just a badly thought out thread, and there was no research done. At least get your facts right if you want to start a debate like this.
I am every bit confident that we will be better next season, our squad will most probably get a shake up, don't expect us to spend much, I think we will be focusing on replacing existing players and getting new blood running through the team even if they are not expensive signings.
The improvement is already evident right now, forget about the Arsenal game, I see it as one game, nothing more, now we move on and focus on the next game...

Agger not good enough? dont agree at all!
Skrtel has lost a bit of form in recent months but hopefully he's getting back to his best after the arsenal game. When he does he's definately good enough.
Sort of agree about insua, he may be good in a couple of years but we need experience and insua is not the answer at the moment
I notice how he hasn't come back to back up his points since the floods of criticism

Kyrgiakos in my eyes is the perfect replacement for Sami. He has even scored for us. He was content in ending his career is the Greek League, but found this great opportunity and is making the most of it. He likes to roll up his sleeves and gets stuck in!
i can sort of agree with the Insua comment, he's not the finished article yet.
However, Agger and skretel are two of the best centre backs in europe, and could walk into any team in europe, but like most top players, their form sometimes dips, but so what? they're still better than most centre backs.
I think the undercurrent of the thread was that the only thing that we've won, including the FA cup, was won with another managers squad. it wasn't very well argued, because using centre backs as an example of how little we've progressed is naive, as we never really struggled defensively under Houllier nor under Rafa (this season aside).
Putting Torres to one side, we've basically stagnated with our attacking options since Houllier. Bable is no better than Ciise, and Ngog is no better than Baros, they may turn out to be better in the future, but you dont get points in advance.

Premier League planning Champions League playoff system
The Premier League is considering a play-off system for the final Champions League place, it has been revealed.
The Times says the Premier League is believed to be considering an end-of- season play-off system to establish the fourth club to qualify for the next season’s Champions League.
Seen as a way of breaking the European “monopoly” of the so-called big four, the idea would involve a play-off between the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh-placed clubs.
I've always wondered why they didn't implement this when they got the fourth spot.
Be absolutely heartbreaking for the team that finishes fourth.

IMO, this would not be fair on the teams that finish 4th / in the top 4, qualifying for the Champs League is something that the "Big 4" achieve by playing well over a full season, and not just over 90 / 180 mins of football. Some of the teams who sometimes participate in the Uefa Cup / Europa League do their best to get KO'd from the cup, and don't really seem to be interested anyway, where as the usual suspects seem to do generally do well...

I think that's the whole point.
Every other team finds it hard to challenge over a season because the big 4 get plenty of money from the CL.
This allows other teams to enter the mix.
Problem is it'll probably allow 1-3 teams to break away while 2-3 challenge almost every year for the same spot.
I read another article not too long ago about each club getting 50 million because of the crazy new TV deal. It's not done yet, but they say it'll bring in 1 billion every year.

Fair point, just that we will now have teams scraping into 7th possibly qualifying for the Champs League, considering that this is the elite competition with the "best" clubs in the world, would we really want these teams qualifying when they don't really take the Europa League seriously?

I think all the teams actually try to go for it.
They only really choose the league over Europa if they're in trouble in the league or have a chance of getting into the CL like Villa did last season.
Also to be fair, none of the big 4 take the Europa League seriously. It's Europe's League Cup only obviously stronger since teams field their first team 99% of the time.

I agree, but the best teams are the best because they can afford to spend big money to bring in the best players.
I doubt it'll be approved to be honest, but I can see why they're thinking about it. The only way to break up the big 4 is to pull a Man City.
Having said that I think the only thing this'll really do is make the EPL more like Spain. 2 big clubs (Man United/Chelsea), 3-4 right behind them (Arsenal/Liverpool/City), while the rest slug it out at the bottom.

Your right, probably why we conceded 7 goals against chelsea over 2 legs.
Also when we concede our next goal in the league, we'll equall our worst goals against over last 4 seasons with over 33% of games still to play.

So we should have kept Sami for one match then?
The previous season, Skrtel got injured, and Sami replaced him midway through the game, and we got beat 3-1 by Chelsea, was that down to Skrtel getting injured or Sami being on the field when we conceded 2 of those goals...
Sami is a great player, and we could have really made use of him earlier this season, but to say that we would struggle without him without providing proper evidence does not justify you claims...

I completely disagree. I think King Kenny was made for Europe. I believe he could take us right to the trophy. :D
Nothings. Changed, u build from the back, I've said for years Skrtel and Agger not good enough, to weak physically and prone to massive mistakes. We concede to many goals in relation to the amount of dangerous situations our defence has to deal with. Swap Carroll for Tiote and Ba( he's a risk but could do a job for 18 months). Find a strong commanding CB and forget wasting £12m on waste of space Sturridge, he will only fail.

But wouldnt we be able to sign better calibre players if we could offer CL football?

To sign better players you need personnel who can identify the correct player. My advice to the owners is, the guys they employ are garbage, sack them and replace them, if you can't find the right personnel just keep an eye on Porto they recruit good players at a cheap price, so nick their targets! Or email me.

Sorry didn't understand your reply?
The back 4 of Johnson, Agger, Skrtel & Enrique is not bad at all. The problem we have is that we play a style of football which encourages the opponents to just sit back and then counter attack at pace. This means that almost every time these 4 are defending, they are doing it on the run - which is so much harder than doing so whilst parking the bus. There is also the physical issue in that some strikers are bigger and stronger than them, like Jones, but you have to balance that with the fact that they're both quick and do have a good level of strength - more all rounders.
We need stronger forward players so that we can keep the ball better, get it forward more and finish chances off better. That will allow us to play 2 more supporting midfield players to help stop these counter attacks. It will also remove that feeling that our opponents are always in the game - which we almost inevitably give even when destroying them - because we just don't score!
I think as Lucas gets back up to speed he will also assist in this. He's still winning tackles but it will take him a month or two to be at his dominating best.

We concede to many goals in relation to the amount of dangerous situations our CBs have to deal with, they also make to many mistakes, they are not crap but not good enough for a top team.
Also Lucas is not a top draw holding mid, not a masher or Didi, and never will be either.
