View Full Version : A suggestion about Live matches
If I want to see any match action, its the day after on LFC.Tv. The picture quality, commentry and stream speed are top notch. The only thing that ruins the match is knowing the score before I watch it. Its impossible to navigate through LFC.Tv without finding out even if I squint and try and ignore any numbers. I was just wondering if LFC.Tv could possibly create a link away from any giveaways. I understand LFC.Tv home page would be a little dull if it wasnt celebrating our latest win, so maybe have a permanent link or seperate site with just the match on, http://liverpoolfc.tv/lastmatch for example. Streaming the match in different lengths is an excellent idea, though along with the forums, must contribute to sever lag that appears across the whole site when any big news/match arises. Hosting on a seperate server for a week before moving it back to the archives could help solve this.
This is useful for anyone who doesn't have access to live coverage or missed the match, such as myself. I do not live in England, do not have access to Sky etc and do not want to know the score and would like to watch the match.
To watch the full 90 mins without knowing the score 4 hours later is something I can live with, though the sooner The Webteam gets this sorted out the happier my wife will be, as its her that gets me the link.
Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I just saw the word "features" and popped it in here.

Hello,
I am a LFCTV Online subscriber, and I think it is a superb service.
I have a suggestion though, that I think would be interesting for those that can't see a match live.
You often have the full 90 minutes available on LFCTV Online a few hours (?) after the match is finished. That is great, but if I want to see the game without knowing the score, it is very difficult. You cannot enter LFCTV Online and the video section without seeing headlines of the score.
The full 90 minutes even has the score in the address, like this:
http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/video/Premiership/10-11/Chelsea-Liverpool-06-02-2011/Chelsea-0-1-LFC-24333.php3
Maybe you can make a direct URL that does not change, which will become active some time after the latest match.
Some examples would be:
http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/video/Premiership/10-11/Latest-Fixture-90mins.php3
http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/video/Premiership/10-11/Latest-Fixture-40mins.php3
http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/video/Premiership/10-11/Latest-Fixture-15mins.php3
I don't know if something like this already exists or has been suggested before, if so I apologize for the extra post. I tried searching the forum, but couldn't find anything related.
I hope the forum admins can forward this suggestion to the lfctv website :)
What do you think, would this be a valuable addition to the video section?
Thanks,
Jay, Norway

Wow, I posted almost the exact same post just now, didn't see yours until after I had posted mine.
I totally agree with you, this would be a valuable addition to the LFCTV Online section. It shouldn't be hard to do either.
Hi guys,
I've merged both your threads as they are the same topic.
This has been suggested before and as far as I am aware it is in the pipeline but there are a number of more urgent things that need to be developed and fixed for example the slowing of the forum speed when we experience high level traffic.
There are also other new features that are currently in development and I am lead to believe they are in the advanced stages and nearly ready for testing and then implementation.
So taking all that into consideration I'm not sure how soon your suggestion could be in developed/in place. Matt and/or one the tech guys would be able to give you a better update on that.
Hopefully if more subscribers like the idea and post on this thread then it will get noticed and maybe we will get a result.
Thanks JohnTheRED,
I didnt noticed your reply until after my above post.
It is something we've wanted to do for what seems like a very long time now. There's a series of replies from me to another supporter who makes precisely the same, entirely valid points as you do above.
All I can say is that our tech team have a massive task list and that this enhancement does appear on it, is something we as supporters understand the importance of and will get done. Alas I don't have a time scale for you.

I am sure there are plenty of subscribers who cannot afford the luxury of Sky, unable to get to the match live or watch Uk Tv, so although this is just a suggestion, I hope its is one that LFC.Tv will concider.
I agree one hundred per cent. I understand it would be difficult but its worth pursuing.

Thanks for the replies, I hope it gets done sooner rather than later. :)
I really don't see the problem though, this could get fixed fairy quickly and easy. Promote the link http://liverpoolfc.tv/lastmatch (or whatever), forward that link to whatever is the latest 90 mins when it is available.
An example would be the Chelsea match:
http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/video/Premiership/10-11/Chelsea-Liverpool-06-02-2011/Chelsea-0-1-LFC-24333.php3
Only difference would be to get rid of the design around the video window (or change it so the result isn't displayed) and also change the "Chelsea 0-1 LFC: 90 mins" text in the upper left corner when you mouse over the video window.
At least setting up the URL and forwarding could be done in 5 minutes, and even that would help alot! :)
Hi 4thKit.
The features section is for article, match reports or memorable threads that we don't want to lose. It's on pre-moderation, so this is why your suggestion didn't appear.
I've moved this to Website Feedback which is the proper place for queries like this. :)
I'm not sure if it would be possible, but I'll leave this here so if Matt, or one of the website staff see it they'll be able to reply.

The commentary is generally good for the games where that bloke and Gillespie commentate.
The commentary on the old games e.g. Fowler 5 minute hattrick v Arsenal is an absolute embarassment to LFC and broadcasting.
I don't know about you but I know there is no way I could possibly wait until the next day without knowing the score of a Liverpool game.
Didnt matt post in this thread earlier along with myself and another mod?

Some subscribers just dont have a choice, so for them what has been suggested is an absolute God-send.

Not sure you understood what I meant but I'll reply as if you did understand. How can some subscribers not have a choice. If you have the internet it doesn't matter where you are in the world or whether you even have a tv, regardless of what satellite stations you have, you have some way of finding out the Liverpool score.
My point is you're suggesting people don't want to know the score of the Liverpool game until they are able to watch it the next day. How can a Liverpool fan possibly go a whole day without wanting to know whether we had won or not.

How many people do you know who would deliberately avoid final score so they could enjoy MOTD without knowing the result, I know many many people who used to do exactly that. It's always better viewing if you don't know whats going to happen scorewise

I don't personally know any Liverpool supporters who avoid the Liverpool score until Match of the Day comes on.

I happened to see an unapproved thread in the features forum and moved it in here and approved it!!!!
Didn't see that there was already a thread on it.

The commentry has been added after the match? I honestly thought it was live. Good Job ! but now the Illusion has been broken. :(

Oh come on fork - take the Istanbul commentary for example. Assuming that's what he is on about I completely agree.

It is good to see that the commentary work of our Steve Hunter is also appreciated with his 'unbiased' but knowledgeable hard work too!:scarf Even through sickness and ill health he still works very hard on preparatory work to commentate on every screening and audio broadcasts of Liverpool FC from it's reserves right through to the first team!
Come to think of it...
Around 8 years ago I remember posting something similar, and Im pretty sure the responce was the same also.
If you think about it,
If the request of a direct link to the match where fans could watch without knowing the score was granted, and alot of Fans began using it, how much money would be lost by various groups ie. Sky...even LFC. This is why I dont think it will happen, and this is the reason why MATT tells us its on the list, but way down.
As Soulsqueeze states, Its not hard at all. Anyone involved with building the LFC.TV website who cannot do this in under an hour really needs to get off the payroll for the club.
Its not going to happen is it :)

That's before my time so I can't comment. I know when the matter was first raised with me that colleagues confirmed it was something they wanted to do.

This is a classic case of adding 2 and 2 together and getting 5. It's simply not true. There's no conspiracy or deeper meaning behind this not getting done.
Hi Matt,
Thanks for the quick reply.
This is a classic case of adding 2 and 2 together and getting 5.
This usually happens while making conclutions due to a lack of infomation. Its what people do when questions that have been asked, and the answers they recieve are limited and dont add up. ie. "Its in the pipeline", for 8 years?
It's simply not true. There's no conspiracy or deeper meaning behind this not getting done.
Then could you please exagurate on why this is it not getting done? Rather than telling us that the conclutions I arrived at, are " Simply not true "
Forgive me if I sound a little argumentative as this is not my intention. I only seek answers as to why an easy task which would benafit so many supporters who are unable to watch their supported team live, is taking such a long time. Alot of effort has obviously gone into the commentry to try and ensure that anyone watching the last game can have as close to a live experience as possible, only to ruin it all by having to trawl through several webpages which highlight the score before arriving at match page.
In your own words
"It is something we've wanted to do for what seems like a very long time now"
Then all I am asking is why hasnt it after such a very long time, and when will it.
If your that busy MATT then send me the webpage Html code and ill do it myself. Im sure I could spare 30 minutes or so ;)

I do try to give detailed answers, although when I do give more details quite often people will try to deconstruct the reply, look for reasons to disbelieve or even some sinister underhand motive which is the real reason. The truth is more banal, it's on a list but it's a list which is continually being added to. So as it's getting near to the top it can be pushed down if a new task is deemed of more value to greater numbers of supporters. When I joined for instance we were in the mid stage of delivering a brand new website. Following that was a move to new premises, new sponsors, new owners etc etc. Each of which created large amounts of new work for the tech team.

You'll have to take my word on just how busy we are. There is a vast amount to do and a limited resource with which to accomplish it. Everyone works really hard to do as much as possible but there is always more to be done.
The other problem is that it's not simply a matter of bashing out some code and sticking it on the site. Anything which goes up has to be rigorously tested. It has to interact with a number of different systems which interact with each other. It's not something that would be rushed, when done it has to be done properly.
Each time the matter has been raised on here I've pursued it with colleagues. Each time an honest reply has been given. I've raised it again and have had confirmation that it's on the list. That's as much as I can do. In a perfect world we'd have done this a long time ago and we're genuinely sorry that it's not happened that way.
How about creating a thread for the time being that is locked, when the highlights are available, mod or Matt or someone posts the direct links to the videos in the thread then locks it again.
The any supporter wanting to view without knowing score, bookmarks the thread or keeps record of URL, navigate straight to thread and click video. that way you could get to the video having visited just two URL's none of witch contain the scores.
You might also need to keep scores from video description for a day or two, or have same video posted twice, one with score in description one without.
Could be a short term fix.

I was going to mention this,
A direct link somewhere doesnt need any maintainance. Its not hard, it doesnt take any more time than someone going to where the match is already in place, coping the link and posting it here. That way we can avoid all the spoilers that are spattered everywhere.
Short term? Its all Ill ever need.

The video description would need addressing however, most of the time the score is mention there.

Took me all of 30 seconds.
Is there any reason why I can watch the last match in 40 mins 15 mins and 90 seconds sessions, at 11.59pm the same day yet cannot watch the full game until 5pm GMT the day after? Has it always been like this?
Is it so hard to put a link up for the full match, It must already be on the server, it also requires less editing than the 40,15, and 90 second sessions.
I think Sky occassionally shows repeats of these games in full so I think a certain amount of time has elapsed before you can view the full game.
I could be wrong but I thought I could watch the Arsenal game earlier last week. The same time as the highlights. If restrictions apply for legal reasons I can accept that, but all Im getting back from the Mods is that the website team are too busy so it seems like its too much work to put a link up on the site. I accepted that and have been putting the link up myself here http://forums.liverpoolfc.tv/showthread.php?t=243585 for the past few weeks for anyone who wants to watch the match and doesnt want to know the score. And now this week I cant find the Link at all.
Yet its not hard to put links of the highlights  Whats going on?

Thanks for that ForkHandles,
I was going to start putting the link up for the latest match again now the season has started for those who missed it, but want to watch it the day after without knowing the score, but I cant find the link.
The only link I can find is the one with the score on the page
http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/video/Prem...nd-13-08-2011/
Is it possible for a mod to point me in the right direction or let me know if LFC.tv have stopped putting the latest match up without the score on the page like they used to. The above matches have been moved or deleted so I was wondering if things have changed.
Also if possible could a Mod let me know if any progression has been made with the webteam making a direct link towards the last match, as was discussed last season between myself and MATT. ( I think )

I don't know if anything has been done in this regard. I know our team are tremendously busy, I caught a glimpse of the upcoming workload and it's eyewatering stuff. I'll ask our systems manager tomorrow.

Darn, I wrote a long reply to this before and it bit the dust before I could press submit :FP:
I spoke to colleagues in tech dept. I don't have any good news for you unfortunately. At the moment all development is focused on renewing the video platform, which will improve performance on different devices.
To deliver a credible score free environment would require more than 30 minutes coding. It would also involve changing the naming style on clips (as a lot of them have the result within them). It remains something that LFC.TV would like to do, but it's not been deemed a high enough priority as yet to reach the top of the dev queue.
As previously I will be passing your views on but the best thing you can do is to write in via the contact form and register your views. With sufficient indication that this is something that many fans want there's a better case for moving this up the wish list.

Thank you Matt for taking time to look into this and replying, twice. :p
I understand that you are only the messenger here and don't know exactly what is going on barring what the Development dept are telling you, so the best I can hope for is your offer to pass my questions and views on.
I have noticed old video content in the Real player format and upgrading to flash, Flv , was a smart move. I believe the one you use now is the most common across all computer and mobile formats already?. So I would be interested to know which video format and codex the team are switching to. Regardless of format, isn't this just a case of taking the new code and integrating it inside an already existing webpage? My understanding is that once the coding has been put in place inside the storage area of the server all you need to know is the path and then it can be called upon multiple times via a simple HTML, XML, XHTML command, making this a one off job, so why is this taking so long? I am no professional on this subject, but even with my limited knowledge I managed to built a website, without any template, containing cutting edge coding for displaying images within 2 days.
This brings me to my next question, how many coffee breaks are these guys having?
To deliver a credible score free environment would require more than 30 minutes coding?
I find this hard to believe sadly. Assuming that the web team still have access to last years webpage template where it didn't show the score, and that you have the match stored on the server, then surely the only template coding that needs to change for each new match is to delete the "LFC 1-1 Sunderland: 90 mins Watch the entire 90 minutes of our 1-1 draw with Sunderland" from the title. ( which is only text from within the HTML and is not hard coded into the video ) The path to where the match is stored on the server doesn't even have to be changed.
Basically, If they could do this last year then whats changed this year? If its a case of " Too much bandwidth " or political reasons I can accept that, but the reasons passed onto you I find a little hard to swallow.
Recently I was thanked by people who also found the match link useful http://forums.liverpoolfc.tv/showthread.php?t=243585
From a business point of view I can only see it making sense to put the match up online without any scoreline. I'm sure that there are many more who would also appreciate this, mainly people such as myself from abroad. LFC are a global brand, but watching our team is not very global friendly. Presuming there are no political reasons involved besides a time delay (which is surely why you don't stream the match live) and considering the amount of, lets say, Asian followers we have, that have no possibility of watching Liverpool play live, I could only see online subscriptions going through roof if they knew they had the possibility of watching there team playing without knowing the score. It wouldn't matter if the match was delayed to American, Asian, Australian supporters as they are in bed anyway when its live, and no amount of paid TV or SKY Sports is going to change that. So the answer to "With sufficient indication that this is something that many fans want there's a better case for moving this up the wish list" boils down to " The reason you don't see sufficient indication that this is something that many fans want " is due to a lack of Marketing and a missed opportunity.
I'm sorry if this may seem irrelevant to you or the Web team, but to watch my team live ( or as near as damn it ) means a lot to me, and I am sure many others, if they knew about it.
Could you keep me updated please Matt.
Found the link, after a year with doing it I forgot where it was :p

Good work with that. I'm trying to see if there's another way of doing this, would be good if we could make those links available via RSS for instance. I'll let you know if there's any progress.
Hey thanks for that Matt, the Rss idea sounds a great, except maybe other Rss may show spoilers :( Seriously though I do appreciate all the help you are doing, and so does the missus, as its her that gets the link for me, sadly she wants to watch also.

Hi,
Thought I would try and expand on the situation and how things are for you. I am one of the development team and as such know exactly how all this plays out
Firstly please do believe us when we say that we do find these little things just as frustrating as you do.
In some respects you are right - it is just as simple as that. However the reality of the situation currently is unfortunately a little different.
As you will of noticed the website appears in two parts - the main site, and the LFCTV Online area. These both appear different - and are in-fact very different.
The main website is the around 2 years old now and referred to as the "new site". This has a much more flexible CMS and allows much more flexibility on the main site - this includes giving Journalists and Operations staff much more ability to change and edit pages. The way the new site is coded also provides much much more flexibility for the developers to produce things quickly and easily.
The LFCTV Online part of the site is a year or two older than the "new site" and was written for the sole purpose of LFCTV Online. The code is now somewhat dated. As a result we are currently ( due to beta in the next few weeks I think ) going through a process of migrating the entire LFCTV Online site into the new system.
Unfortunately from our users perspective this will only appear as a lot of work - for no apparent change at all. However the reasons for doing the migration are to allow us to have a single process of providing and producing pages - rather than the two we have at the moment.
To help make this process easier one of the rules put in place was to freeze development on the current LFC TV Online so that we were not attempting to test, debug and gather feedback on two systems at the same time.
Due to various reasons the migration has taken longer than expected - as a result the development freeze has been longer than expected.
So this is one of the "holes" that the "scoreless" template request has slipped into.
The other area as Matt has pointed out is that a brand new video serving and provisioning system is being put in place. This should have more noticeable impact once launched because, as Matt says, it will improve video quality and allow more devices to display the videos. Due to various contractual reasons this work has had to take precedence over much simpler tasks as the deadlines are hard - and to be blunt very expensive if missed.
The final aspect to all of this is the overall general infrastructure changes that we are putting in place. These are very much needed and take up a large volume of time - however they are showing results. Despite how it feels sometime the web site is far strong and more stable now than in the past 2 years. We do still have issues - however we have also increased the level of traffic we are taking as well.
The LFCTV Online site is a prime example of where we are making positive changes in doing this migration. I have not done any specific comparisons however the current LFCTV Online is full PHP with minimal caching layers in place. The "new site" on the other hand has built in 6 or so caching mechanisms that can be made use of when displaying pages and content.
As a result when we are done with the migration the performance of the LFCTV Online site AND the servers as a whole will improve - giving everyone a better experience.
This improvement in performance will be "re-invested" in various parts of the site to make them more stable, dynamic and interactive. Giving the fans a better experience.
We do honestly understand how frustrating these things are. Myself, the other developers, our project managers, tester, journalists and Matt ALL have a "personal" list of tasks/tickets that annoy the hell out of us - but are just not serious enough to make it on the list. For some of the Journalists and Operations teams these are improvements they want on CMS tasks they do several times a day.
They are all on the list - and we will get them done - and I know that the "scoreless" page is also on the list as well. As Matt points out it is unfortunately right now a big list with some very key tasks on it that if we drop, miss or delay we result in much greater disruption for everyone.
I hope this goes some way to explaining the overall situation in a bit more detail and offers some hope for the future for you.
Regards
David
