In Austria/Germany you get a certain amount (not selectable) of HD channels for free (kind of), about 5 I'd guess and then there are ten-ish others you have to pay for (€100/year), although the SD Version of this channel has always been free and still is.

I just wonder what's it like in other countries?

I think now when you sign up in the UK you get a few free ones. I believe things like BBC, ITV etc but to get the Skysports HD packages etc it costs quite a bit !

Do you guys have to pay a monthly fee to be able to watch BBC or even listen to the radio?

you have to have a tv licence which costs about £120/year, but the bbc is quality and there's no adverts

You only need HD if you have a stupidly enormous television.

Sounds about right - it's similair here, probably a little bit more expensive. Seems like that the differences are rather marginal.

"need" is a relative phrase, everyone should define it for himself - I never was really desperate to get HD but I had some spare money and figured I'd invest it in HD. Now watch football in HD and then SD, the difference is quite big, especially with football I'd say. Generally I agree with you though.

You can tell you don't pay for the TV licence! ;) It's more like £144. An absolute ****** rip-off.

And as far as HD channels go you need to have free Sat or Sky or depending on your region of the country there's freeview HD. So basically you're being charged even if you can't get HD!:(

size does matter . On my old 32 inch TV I never noticed any problems with the picture when watching football. However with a larger screen I've noticed a huge difference in the lack of quality on standard definition images. I wish I could afford HD .

You have to pay £10 a month for HD channels from sky. That includes BBC and ITV HD if I'm not mistaken.
