View Full Version : Injuries weaken Dalglish's hand in contract talks

Kenny Dalglish's plans to land the Liverpool job with a flourish have been rocked by a devastating injury crisis.

The temporary Reds boss was hoping to strengthen his position in negotiations over making the role permanent with a late assault on the Premier League.

But he could be without up to FIVE key players for the season’s finale, including his influential skipper Steven Gerrard.

And even though the Kop legend is still odds-on to become the next full-time Liverpool boss, a dip in form could potentially weaken his position.

Dalglish was expected to be confirmed as the permanent boss within the last fortnight, but defeats at West Ham and West Brom have reduced the urgency of talks.

Liverpool’s owners are committed to making the Kop idol their manager, but they don’t want to rush into anything, and believe there is no pressure to hurry talks.

King Kenny, for his part, was planning a late surge up the table to make the momentum for his appointment irresistible – and he will be disappointed at the latest setback as he attempts to rally his troops following the defeat by former boss Roy Hodgson at West Brom on Saturday.

He knows that weakens any bargaining position he has, as he looks for a long-term contract.

Centre-half Daniel Agger will miss the rest of the season after damaging knee tendons in the defeat at the Hawthorns.

Yesterday, Dalglish confirmed Agger is out for the season. He said: “Daniel has a problem with the tendon behind his knee and won’t be involved again this season.

“He’ll be a couple of months before he can start training.”

Full-backs Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly are facing at least another month out, while Fabio Aurelio is still missing having managed just 28 minutes of action in the past month.

Johnson was injured at the Hawthorns, and rookie Kelly was effectively ruled out until the summer since he suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury in training a week ago.

And Dalglish said: “Glen has a hamstring problem which is usually about three or four weeks and it’s the same for Martin.

“It’s disappointing for the players because they want to play in every game.

“We have to get on with what we’ve got.”

Key midfielder Gerrard will miss the rest of the campaign with the damaged groin which kept him out of the West Brom defeat.

How the Hell is this KK fault? The squad is not deep enough to call on adequate reserves. This is more Newspaper Hi-jinx not wanting Kenny to get the job, because London and Manchester are getting nervous!

I don't think the owners would have the balls to not give him a contract. Imagine the backlash if they didn't!

I don't think the owners need any more convincing. He did enough with our hopeless squad.

How on earth are injuries going to destroy Dalglish hopes? I didn't realise getting a certain position would ensure him the job. Could have sworn working with what you got that counts. Usual media crap. Can't wait till I'm an 'unbiased' journalist with a clear Liverpool favouritism.

This argument makes no sense at all and is just the papers way of stirring up toruble where there isn't any. Pay no attention.

Henry's quoted as saying in the last few days that he was shocked at how thin the squad was in terms of depth and quality. An injury crisis just highlights this.

Pinch of salt fellas. Amazing how they cannot definitively find out who we are looking at for the summer, yet this journalist happens to know the situation regarding Kenny's future? :D

I think the owners know already how sub standard and injury prone large areas of our squad are and it would be a tad unfair to blame someone who has only had a single transfer window to rectify it.

this argument is based on the presumption that KK getting the job permanently depends on results between now and the end of the season. I would imagine that the significant turnaround in results and morale since he took over, as well as the not insignificant fact it would be a certain way to turn the fans against the owners, will be enough to secure KK the job.

No matter how you twist or turn it something IS not working, for obvious reasons i cant say if its the medical staff or the training methods or what it is, but Gerrard was set to come back, he got injured during training, kelly was close to coming back, he got injured during traning, Agger is injury prone yes, but the way the past few months has been going is madness, same with Aurelio, and now GJ ...
Something is not working and it needs to be figured out fast, coz this might have lost us the 5th place and it might as this Article says cost Dalglish the job ( i hope it doesnt), i think the owners have set their sights on succes and you cant have succes if the key players keep getting injured..
i REALLY hope its all just bad luck and coinsidences, lets just hope for the best...

I do wish they'd put this situation to bed once and for all. The longer it drags on, the more the speculation will build, and we've had enough uncertainty around the club recently to last a lifetime.

I agree.

It cannot be good for recruiting players either. I mean who would want to come here, if they do not know who the manager is?
