View Full Version : Your National Anthem?
I have realised that the forums posses many posters from countries all over the world, and I am intriged with their national anthems. A countries national anthem explains a lot about their nation.
Here is mine:

My only dissapointment is that not all Welsh people know their national anthem, and in many schools, they are discouraged to sing the anthem. (In my primary school we were discouraged, despite being a 95% Welsh community, and the only time we sang it was during the Six Nations.).
"Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau". (Translated to "Land of my Fathers").

Our one should be Land of Hope and Glory. God Save The Queen is just dull dull dull.
In terms of patriotic epicness though, nothing comes close to the Russian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMZfXN1UOpw) national anthem.
God Save the Queen is the British anthem anyway is it not?

God save our gracious Queen, God save our holy Queen, God save our Queen.
On the day of the royal wedding a chap was going round Liverpool in fancy dress with QILF written on his attire, disgusting.

Wow, I love that song. I find it incredible that England don't have a official anthem. I do like the song England sing at rugby matches. (Sweet home, sweer chariot)

*Swing low
I love the Welsh national anthem. Singing that at the rugby is one of the best feelings ever :)
I agree Land of Hope and Glory is way better than God Save the Queen also.

Trittst im Morgenrot daher,
Seh’ ich dich im Strahlenmeer,
Dich, du Hocherhabener, Herrlicher!
Wenn der Alpenfirn sich rötet,
Betet, freie Schweizer, betet!
Eure fromme Seele ahnt
Eure fromme Seele ahnt
Gott im hehren Vaterland,
Gott, den Herrn, im hehren Vaterland.
and i dont like it! all my swiss-mates love god save the queen and would like something similar!

My favourite anthems are the ones from former Communist countries. Most of them are so patriotic.

We, together, are hundreds of flowers, in the Nepali garland
Spread from Mechi to Mahakali, is the wonder of our land
We, together, are hundreds of flowers, in the Nepali garland
Spread from Mechi to Mahakali, is the wonder of our land
A playground for millions of nature's gifts
Independent and standing tall because of blood of heroes.
Land of knowledge, land of peace, From soaring peak to hill and plain
Indivisible - our beloved, motherland Nepal.
Multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-religious and with timeless culture
Progressive nation ours, Hail hail Nepal!

I grew up in the age of recognising the German anthem with Michael Schumacher behind the wheel. I was sick of it by the time he retired, and now Vettel's gone and gotten massively awesome so I'm stuck with it :D
The Scottish anthem. About 40 odd seconds in. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR6QIYEXCp0)
Is Irish still commonly spoken?
Nope not even close. There's more polish spoken than Irish here. Only down in the Gaeltachts will it be still spoken widely and there tiny little areas around the country. Tbh would love to speak it fluently just to have but its taught terribly in schools.

Denmark has two just like England. The most common one is "Der er et yndigt land" (There is a beautiful country) and "Kong Christian stod ved højen mast" (King Christian stood by the lofty mast).
Der er et yndigt land

Kong Christian stod ved højen mast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvnqmkkdyEo&feature=related (never really liked this one)...I wish that "I danmark er jeg født" (In denmark I was born) was it instead! Much more beautiful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ib0wrNK-ko :scarf
