Ok, he isn't Messi or Robben but he's the best left winger in the league at the moment, if the videos didn't prove that then the stats do:
8 goals (7 in the league), 10 assists (9 in the league) in 40 games (38 in the league).
He was also Villa player of the season for a reason, I think they know a bit more about their players than you or I. If you have a look at their forums they value him at £20-25m which may sound ridiculous but to be honest we'd say the same if he was our best player. If we can get him for £15m or less it would be good business and we'd finally have a REAL left winger at the peak of his career and he's ENGLISH too.
If we want a direct, pacy winger who can cross a ball then we should get Downing. If we want someone to cut in like Maxi, Cole and Kuyt then fine, bring in Young, but I get ready for another Pennant.
Hope we sign him before Arsenal do! :scarf
If this had been 2 years ago, I'd say yes for definite.
But he is 27 now, and hmmm I'm just not quite sure he's the best option we could get.
He's a quality player though.

He is a decent player. But we finally have money to spend and after however many years of crying out for a great tricky winger, I'd be disappointed if we got Downing as the answer.

He will be 27 soon but what's wrong with that? Meireles is 28. Cole is 29 etc. We signed these players not too long ago. I'd rather we buy experienced players like Downing and bring in youths from the reserves, a mix is always good. Also, 27 is the peak of a players career. We'd be getting the best of Downing.

I'd rather we spend that money on Aguero. Downing is more than capable of being our left winger.
Does Downing have pace though? I feel that's one thing we sorely lack in our squad, along with natural width. Downing would definitely solve the width issue, but is he a quick player?

Quicker than Young. He's one of the quickest left wingers in the league so yes.
I'd take him in a heart beat, if you tell him too he'll hug the touch line and bomb crosses in has put in shifts at left back too, he's quite comfortable and effective playing from the right. I've seen him starting from centre midfield and playing a blinder.
I've always thought he was quality never quite understood why people don't think much of him.

Because he had 1 off season at Villa. :FP: People seem to forget the days when Middlesborough were a 1 man team with Downing all those years.

Yeah, maybe you're right...
I think for me it depends strongly on the price. He's not one of those players I'd break the bank for, but if he was here, I'd be perfectly happy.
He wouldn't have much of a resale value, though, and I'd possibly prefer Adam Johnson if we could - but Downing could provide ammo for Carroll!

Adam? He's no better than what we have and he's too slow. Downing is better than ANY of our wingers, for the past 5 years. And who cares about resale value? Why must we always insist on selling our players in the future, if they are good keep them. He's still got 4-5 good years left in him.

Theres something about Downing I've always liked. He's a confidence player, if he's confident he can be amazing and imagine the confidence Kenny can give this guy, he could bring out his real potential. I like the fact that hes very fast and is always looking to get to the by-line. He can also cut in and has a fierce shot.

downing is a player for the here and now and we can badly do with that.
id take him for £15m.

Not sure if got wires crossed, but I mean Adam Johnson, not Charlie Adam.
Adam Johnson is incredibly exciting to watch. Obviously Downing has more experience etc but Johnson is pacey, can score and provide.
And he will probably be bench-warming at City. Though they may not want to sell to us.
And like I said, I'd be happy with Downing but only at the right price - for me, that would be £12m or less...

Ah, Adam Johnson. I hope we get him too but to say he's better than Downing isn't right imo. Downing was the better player this season, but yes Adam Johnson does have potential.

Agreed.
First half of last season, Johnson was on fire, but then got injured unfortunately. Downing had a great season throughout in a struggling Villa team.

Like I said I always thought he was quality not just the season past, If he started on our left side he would be a great supply line for Carroll, or if we weren't playing with Carroll I think he's proved he has the ability to interchange with the rest of the midfield.

He's quicker than Hernandez who is pretty quick.
I like downing in terms of playing ability. He will be good for the next 3 or 4 years. But then he will be worthless. Will we be buying a player with no sell on value? I don't think we will to be honest. Not when he will cost us over 10million. Not that I don't want him here, I really think he will improve us, but maybe we can get better? I don't know.

The same applies to Young. They are at similar ages. Also did we think about that when we signed Meireles, Cole etc? No.

if they got young or downing on top of a deal for a mata or hazard that would be brilliant.

Why did you mention Young? I don't want us to sign Young. Not a fan of his tbh. With signing Meireles, Cole...Old regime, the new regime have different ideas.

why do people assume every single signing has to be a young player. yes the majority should be young players 24 yrs old and under but a few players older can come in and can do a job for us.

Downing would be fantastic for a second or third choice winger. But I don't think I'd want him to be our main supply line from out wide.. In fact I'm confident I wouldn't. Could be wrong, though. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. :IN:

This bit from 3:30 to 3:50 sums up Stewart Downing:
http://www.footylounge.com/films//milankakabaros/stewart-downing-v-manchester-united-13112010-video_bbcfd6e16.html
Pace, directness, TOP quality crosses. That is something Young can't do. This was against Man Utd mind you.
I would be very happy with him, great crosser and just what we need.

I agree with you. I think in some area's a bit more experience is key. Maybe on the wing and attacking positions though, we could do with fresher talent that will be around for a good few years. Not suggesting Downing is too old though. Think he would be a good signing. Not sure whether Dalglish and Comolli will go for him over other players though.

Suarez7Aquilani14

I've yet to see Young perform in a big game like Downing did there against Man Utd and to some extent against us too. He absolutely destroyed Man Utd that game.
I wouldn't be unhappy with Downing, but I wouldn't want him to be the best winger we sign this summer. Id rather we get one for say 20m then him for what... 12m i guess.

2 years left and he wouldn't come here to be a squad player. :FP: He wants to play Champions League footy at some point. Also, you'd never get the best English winger in the league for £10m.

Been watching him this season and been impressed. Including 2 very good performances against real madrid and barcelona. First team in sevilla at 22 and had more assists then downing this season.

If thats the case,
Downing 8 goals and 10 assists in 40
Perotti 4 goals 8 assists in 36
Not much difference in the stats and when you consider perotti will come 5 years younger and at 7million, already has a cap for argentina and huge potential, i know who i'd take.

Fair enough. But atm Downing is the better player and proven in the Premierleague and the stats prove that. He's got 2 more assists and 4 more goals. But yes Perotti has potential but maybe he wouldn't cut it in the Premierleague? If we can get both of them then I'd be happy with that. 1 left winger, 1 right winger.

My main concern for the prem proven player is the price, if we could get downing for the same as we could get perotti and be happy to get both, but if we get quoted a silly sum we should leave it alone.

Considering the fact that he's English his price will be inflated a bit. If he wasn't English I'd pay up to £12m for him, but since he is I think we'll have to pay £15-17m. But imo it is worth it, he's the best left winger in the league. If we can get Perotti + Downing for around £20m it would be a very good deal.
