Kenny Dalglish is set to add former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Walsall defender Steve Staunton to his coaching set up at Anfield
The Irish Independent report Staunton is on the verge of a agreeing a position alongside Dalglish and Steve Clarke at the club he made 148 appearances during two spells.
It was Dalglish who signed Staunton as a player for Liverpool in 1986. His first spell at Anfield lasted five years before he was sold to Aston Villa
He stayed at Villa Park for seven seasons before returning to Liverpool on a free transfer, signed by the newly installed joint managers Roy Evans and Gerard Houllier.
In 2000 the Irishman again made the move to Villa Park, and later made moved to Coventry and, finally, Walsall.
The 42-year-old moved into management in 2006, when Ireland saved him from extending his Walsall career beyond the handful of appearances he had made under Paul Merson. Sir Bobby Robson was appointed to give him guidance in the role but his health meant he was unable to carryout the role all had wished for in supporting Staunton.
After 17 games ‘Stan’ left the position with the country he represented 102 times. There was a two-year gap before he was back in the hot seat. His opportunity came at Darlington where he was on a hiding-to-nothing. Darlington were already headed for the drop and there was no Great Escape to be flirted with, Darlington lost 19 times of his 25 matches in charge.
Most recently Staunton has been scouting for Tony Mowbray at Middlesbrough. He is keen to return to coaching and where better to go than to learn off Kenny Dalglish?
What position alongside Dalglish, Clarke and Keen one must wonder?? Defensive coach I presume... Which would be a great idea! Carra can be his understudy too and when he retires can be assistant defensive coach until Staunton moves on or retires and Carra can take over :D
Another great move in my opinion... If true of course :p
