Born and grew up in Anfield, very close to Liverpool's ground and as a boy I went to Anfield Road Junior School, just down the road from LFC.
If you were one of the few supporters rich enough or lucky enough to go to the game by car in the late 60's, early 70's and parked in one of the streets around Anfield it was probably me who "took care" of your car whilst you were at the match, using those immortal words, "mind yer car mate".. the price was around a shilling or two per car, which everybody was always willing to pay .. happy days.
My first Liverpool shirt was an old white t shirt which we dyed red, the number on the back was 9, (didn't have enough material for a 10),the number and the white oval crest were both drawn in pen and cut from an old sheet. It was brilliant, wouldn't take it off, I tried wearing it to school but got caught and sent home to change, (sulked all day, didn't go back to school, went and played on the bombdies instead).
Unfortunately my match days at Anfield were seriously hit when I left Liverpool in 1977 to join the Royal Navy. Most of my navy career was spent at Royal Navy air stations and on aircraft carriers HMS Invincible and HMS Illustrious.
Now enjoying life in sunny Bucharest Romania, (except in the winter, when it is, as the Romanians say, "soare cu dinte", the sun with teeth), absolutely freezing !!
