Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has been named the player-coach of Thailand Premier League side Muangthong United.
Robbie Fowler has made the step into management
Fowler joined the club as a player, signing a one-year contract in July 2011, after spells in the Australian A-League with North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory. However, with Muangthong being knocked out of the AFC Cup by Kuwait this week, it was decided that action had to be taken.

A statement on the Muangthong website read: ''The Board have appointed Robbie Fowler as the acting Head Coach and terminate the contract of Portuguese boss Henrique Calisto. The contract is until the end of the season and the team must adapt to long-term goals if it is to succeed in Asia.''

I never really though of him as manager but I hope I am pleasantly surprised and he can bring them success. Who knows where it will lead him.........?

10 years ago I don't think anyone would have expected Robbie to move into management, when Rafa brought him back though you could see how much he's really matured into a Gary Mac style role model for younger players.

Class guy, love that he's making his name somewhere else as well, just like Wenger did.

Cue people saying he should be our manager next time we fail to win a game.

Be intresting to see how he handels both roles, and if he would pick himself for games.

Never really thought of Robbie as management material.

Carra looks and has always acted as a future manager in waiting.

Robbie was always a bit of a messer but having said that he's got a lot of playing experience behind him and I'm sure has picked up a lot of football knowledge in his 20 plus years.

Maybe he won't develop into a top class number 1 but I can certainly see him developing into a great strikers coach.

    Good luck to you Robbie!

A Carragher/Hyypia combination at Manager/Asst. Manager, with Fowler in the boot room

If they could turn out players in this same mold as themselves we'd have a team of footballers that combine character, passion, cheekiness, bags of skill and a never say die attitude.

Let's line this trifecta up for when Kenny retires!!

And an affection for the smell of the touchline, or perhaps the taste of grass?
