Please note I will up-date this thread on a regular basis. So if you just want the latest news, please scroll down to the latest entry.. Thanks.
Here is my Letter from Brazil.
I want feedback from people on this, what do you want me to report?, and what do you not have an interest in?, I'll go by majority opinion.
I will not bother with weekly results etc, you can find those easily on the various web sites.
I will give a "picture" of how the press, media and public, view things. An overall view of what is happening in Serie A. Also with the National team, preparations for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Yes they have already started.
I will report some general news, and a few other sports related items. Plus a few fun items. and items on "life in Brazil". Please give some input/feedback as to what you all think is worthwhile or rubbish.
Here's an example,
Football first:
I am sure you are all aware of the appointment of Mano Menezes, as the new trainer of the national team.
But has it been reported what went on "behind the scenes"?
The President of Brazil, Sr Lula; wanted Felipe Scolari, but Ricardo Teixeira, as head of the CBF decided on Mano.
Now you have to be a pretty tough cookie, to go against your presidents' wishes, with all the risks involved. So why did Teixeira take this decision?
Well it looks as if Teixeira wants to have more involvement with the team selection. And of course we all know Felipe, is not a "yes man". So time will tell. Good luck Ricardo and good luck Mano Menezes.
Will Mano make a good job of it, with Teixeira looking over his shoulder?, insisting on new and younger players being included in the squad. Time will tell.
Lula wants a winning team for the 2014 World Cup, "nothing less will do" he stated..So an Interesting situation.
The New look team gets rid of many of the older stars.(not sure about Kaka, he is injured) The latest selection sees eight changes from the team that exited the world cup. With Lucas given a starting roll, A new broom, does appear to sweep clean.
Alltogether a much more attacking formula. It was interesting to see Lucas deployed as an attacking midfielder, and then after twelve minutes??? Mr Hodgson were you watching?
From a Liverpool point of view, who openend the scoring in the friendly 3-0 win over a Barcelona B team in Spain?
Flamengo, last seasons champions, have gone into meltdown, (see the story below) Corinthion and Flumenese are leading the pack, whilst Flamengo are hovering above the relagation zone..
So much have Flamengo fallen from grace, the cartoon in the National sports journal on weds, was of a Flamengo aged bird, attempting to take a penalty. The problem was all the yellow police "do not enter this area" tape.covering the goal. Which relates to only one goal in seven matches, and their goal keeper being in prison. see below.
Other news.
The Bruno Saga.
True life can be stranger than fiction. Anybody looking for a good screenplay for a movie?
Edited and up-dated from my previous thread, "Nrws from Brazil".
A few months back, the Flamengo goalkeeper, Bruno Souza, was taken into police custody. The police are investigating the disappearance of Brunos ex lover, twenty five year old Eliza Samudio, a "model" and mother of Brunos' baby. She has been missing since "approx" 4/5th June.
Bruno is married to Dayanne Rodrigues do Carmo Souza, with whom he has two children..
Bruno told the police he had not spoken to Eliza, or seen her, for over a month, and had no idea where she could be..
It was later revealed, Bruno had lied: Mobile telephone records proved that he had called Eliza (or at least her mobile telephone), on the 9th of June, and had a lengthy conversation. When this fact was put to Bruno, he said he had a bad memory, and had "forgotten" the conversation, but now reminded of it, he said Eliza was in Rio when he spoke to her, about maintenance payments for the child.
On further investigation, the police found that when this call to Elizas' phone was made, records proved that she, (or at least the telephone), was less than ten miles from Brunos house.(which is a long way from Rio); It is the last recorded use of the telephone.
Day two. A "friend" of Eliza, claims she had taken part in "threesomes" with Bruno and Eliza. Bruno denies ever having met the girl (name withheld).
Day three. Brunos imported Range Rover is impounded by the police. There are blood stains on the passenger seat, and on the door material. Brunos wife Dayanne, states to the police, that these are due to her purchasing some frozen meat. Which "thawed out" whilst she had lunch with a friend, she had not had time to clean the car. The blood is later proved to be human. DNA tests are asked for, with samples being taken from Bruno, Elizas child, and Elizas parents.
Day four. It is revealed, that Elizas' "model work" was in fact as a porno star, and prostitute. This disproves Brunos account of how they first met. Because Bruno had "downloaded" her films three months before he, as claimed; "happened to meet her by chance in a nightclub", and didn't know anything about her "acting career" . Also, before meeting in the club, he had contacted her by use of his mobile phone..
Day five. With new proof, Bruno has to admit, he was involved in "group sex/orgies" with Eliza and implicates other Flamengo players. (names withheld).
It is further revealed, that these "orgies" took place over a period of some weeks, around the time that Eliza became pregnant. Bruno had expressed doubts, that perhaps he was not the father, of the child. but DNA tesys proved he was.
Elizas solicitor meanwhile, tells police, that the paternity monies as required by the law of Brazil, would amount to "approx" 30% of Brunos R$200.000 a month salary. And that Bruno had been informed of this fact. He is already paying 30% to his ex wife.
Day six. Elizas father is told he must hand over the child; to Elizas Mother. Reason being, the father is a suspected paedophile, who had spent time in prision on charges of the rape of a ten year old girl. A case that never got to trial, as the parents of the child refused to allow her to give evidence. (I told you this was a complicated story, it gets worse).
It should be noted, that Elizas' mother, left the family home when Eliza was a child. And had little or no, contact with her. Later the Mother files for legal custody of Bruninho,(the child) If she gets this, she gets the paternity monies. So are her actions purly "maternal instinct" as she claims?
Day seven. Brunos seventeen year old cousin,(juvenile, name withheld) talks to the police. He states that he was involved in the murder and disposal of the body. That a "lifelong friend" of Brunos, Macarrao, asked him to go with him in Brunos Range Rover, to Rio, to collect Eliza, who had earlier telephoned Macarro in an attempt to resolve the paternity (money) issue of the child, and how much Bruno would have to pay. ie "negotiate a lower figure"..
Day Eight, Police continue the search for Elizas' body. A pair of glasses and a single sandal, found in Brunos Range Rover, are identified as hers, by her mother..
Two other juviniles come forward, (names withheld) they state they were paid R$3000.00 each by Bruno, to "cut the meat" off Elizas body. Which was then fed to dogs, Pit Bulls and a Rottweilers. Now the search is switched to the "rest" of the corpse.
Day nine, Brunos' ex wife, is taken into custody, she has been proven to have lied about both her whereabouts and Brunos' (false alibis' also the blood stains); on the assumed day of the kidnapping/murder 4th June ##. (remember Elizas phone was still in action on the 9th; It is said the cousin states that he and Macarro travelled to Rio on the 4th, and "collected" Eliza, (some reports question if she was abducted) from a hotel. That Macarro strangled Eliza,, with an arm lock, untl she lost conciousness. And she later died.
## Later evidence proved they were all in a Motel room together, and the staff went to the room on three occassions, to ask them to keep the noise, "screaming" down.
More of that to follow.
Day ten. The police release a video of Eliza, in it, she states that when she was five months pregnant, Macarro and Bruno abducted her from Rio, took her to an apartment, poured drink and drugs into her, in an attempt to abort the baby. Samples of urine which had been stored by her Doctor, show traces of drugs and alcohol which would confirm this accusation.
Day Eleven. Bruno and Macarro go missing. A nationwide manhunt is launched. Brunos wife is released without charge.
Later that night, Bruno gives himself up to the police.
Today. Bruno is still being held in Nelson prison. along with others accused of the crime. Awaiting trial.
Many differing stories as to who "allegedly" committed the murder abound. And remember, no body has yet been found.
Did Bruno order her to be killed?, was it a violent struggle which had a tragic outcome. The police are still trying to find out the truth, from all teh differing stories.. They have ruled out Brunos wife from the actual murder, but she may be charged with (equivalent of) perverting the course of Justice.
All in all, a very strange tale. Stranger for it being a true story. Much of the news is being withheld. But will be released after police complete their investigations. Which may take some time.
Bruno and Marcarro are currently ibeing held in prison in Rio. They are attending court on further charges relating to the alleged kidnap and torture of Eliza last September. When it is alleged, they forced her to take drugs in an attempt to abort the baby.
Speculation has it, that because of Brunos' wealth and fame, the support he still has from the Flamengo fans, and his connections with the police, that none of this will ever get to trial.
But then this is Brazil. I will try to explain more about Brazil in my next Letter.
