Totally out of left field comment but watching the game on HDTV thanks to GolTV is such a boon. Especially enjoying the sight of some of the Sao Paulo crowd - didn't know they sold a Corinthian's dress !! The woman wearing it was really doing the team colors justice.

Liedson subbed out - man's been immense for the Cori campaign.

If only Palmeiras showed this much heart and determination all season, Felipao wouldn't be on the hot seat.

Flamengo seal their Copa Lib spot. Vasco are done .. finish 2nd in the league. Congratulations to Corinthians - they win the title in the same unspectacular style they've played all season. But full credit to Tite and team for being the most consistent team all season. Even if that consistency included a healthy dose of BORING.

Yes ... it was an emotional day for the Coris - first Serie A title since 2005. Pity one of the greatest football players in Brazilian history could not enjoy it. Ronaldinho on PFC TV right now -- speculation is rife that his brother/manager is looking for an European team for him. Tbh, I think Ronaldinho in a defensive midfielder/Volante position could prolong his career for a good many more years. Plus he still has that ability to make the Hollywood pass.

Ok .. switching over to the Chilean league playoff QF. Universidad Chile vs Union Espanola. Eduardo Vargas and Gustavo Lorenzetti in action !

Yes indeed, a day to remember for all the Corinthians, and don't forget the Liverpool link, with a certain American owner, who almost ruined the club.

The tv companies treated the two games like a pair of FA Cup finals. They bigged up the games, and wanted to boost the ratings, as there is a battle going on as to who will get the rights next year.

But I had to laugh at one reporters question, "How did you manage to win the league?", answer, "errrr???? we won more games".

The cameraman was more interested on a young Lady applying lipstick, "I wonder who she is hoping to kiss?" asked the commentator.

Great to see all the teams put in so much emotion and effort today. Shame they don't always do that every game.

Campus? That leads me to suspect you are in the USA? or have you learnt American English in Brazil?

Whichever, just wanted to ask if you can get a link to Globo tv in Brasil, they have a number of "New" shirts which they have up for grabs. Also "Lance" will be doing a special offer on next years special edition shirts.

The shirts have the number 2011 on the back and "PentaCampeao" quite a collectors item for them.

Give them my congratulations from Rio. I'm off out for a beer soon with a couple of Paulistas. But taking it easy, we all have early starts tomorrow.

Sorry your post got lost in all that second half action.

Due to the last day of the season here, plus friendlies/youth teams, are not really treated seriously in Brasil, there is no mention of this game anywhere. Or at least none that I could find.

I'll take another look at a few Brasil sites, and if I find anything, will post it later.

You could try this site, but I have no idea if the sites is any good. Good luck.

I really hope the 2012 State championships and the Serie A next year will allow a lot more rest for these brilliant players. We've seen some fantastic talent play this year.

Personally the best 2 games I saw this season :
    Flamengo 5 - Santos 4. (Ronaldinho hat-trick, Neymar 2 goals)
Fluminense 5 - Gremio 4. The defending champions led by Fred in an epic game.

Onto my personal end of season team - would be glad to hear from others on their impressions.
    ================================================== ================================================== ================================================== ==
My Final Serie A XI :

GK - Felipe (Flamengo) - RobinRS rightly pointed out that Felipe was an absolute star behind a very weak Flamengo team and led the league in saves. He was also selected to Globo's team of the week more times than any other GK.

    Honorable mention :
GK - Jefferson (Botafogo) - (Moved from starter to reserve). Saves galore from a very good goalkeeper. And his booming kicks were a boon for Botas. And he's been called for a few of the Brazil games that feature South American based players.
    Leandro Prass (Vasco)
    Rafael (Santos)

    DEFENDERS :
Fagner (Vasco) - RB. Only 22 but if he keeps playing like this he will demand an opportunity for Brazil at the RB position.

Dede (Vasco) - CB. I would have wanted us to go for this absolutely dominant 23 yr old CB if we didn't already have Seba. Scored 6 goals as well !

Antonio Carlos (Botafogo) - CB. 28 year old played 2 years at Ajaccio in France before returning back to Brazil. Scored 4 goals to go with his stellar defensive presence.

Juninho Evanildo Barbosa (Figueirense) - LB. Only 21 but his age belied his contributions to a Fig team that finished within 3 points of a Copa Lib spot. A player to watch in future years. Also scored a goal and had 6 assists.

    Honorable mentions :
Danilo (Santos) RB - Great young RB and we'll see much more of the 20 yr old in coming years.
Henrique (Palmeiras) CB Excellent player lost in the shuffle and mess that is Palmeiras. He is on loan from Barca and perhaps he can make it back there.
Leandro Castan (Corinthians) CB Key member of the league's best defense. Spent one mostly unsuccessful year in Sweden a few years ago with Helsingborgs and is still only 25.
Bruno Cortes (Botafogo) LB 24 yr old LB was a major reason for Botafogo's midseason surge.

    MIDFIELDERS :
Romulo (Vasco Da Gama)/Ralf (Corinthians) - Its a cop out I know but I just couldn't leave either one of these defensive midfielders off the team. They were both absolute monsters of the midfield and Romulo's youth (21 yrs) means Brazil has yet another DMF of considerable potential to look forward to in future years. Ralf's put himself in contention for a spot on the Brazilian national team.

Ronaldinho (Flamengo) - What a player and what a comeback performance from the maestro ! Faded a bit in the latter parts of the campaign but I blame greedy Teixeira and his bizarre scheduling of so many internationals in the middle of a crucial Serie A season. That plus the ridiculous volume of games top teams have to play in the State championships.

Danilo (Corinthians) - Midfield engine for the eventual Serie A champions. Not fabulous statistics but week in week out he did all the little things to secure the vital points.

Diego Souza (Vasco) - Heart and soul of the Vasco attack. Kept them in many a game with a timely goal or assist and really sorry his efforts weren't rewarded more suitably.

    Honorable mentions :
Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo) - 5 games into this season, 19 year old Lucas Moura looked MVP caliber. He then was away from the team for the Copa America and after his return, he had some stellar games here and there but both Lucas and SPFC seemed to lose momentum that they never quite regained. But as all of us at LfB can attest, he will be an all-star for years to come !!!

Oscar (Inter) - What a year the young 20 yr old has had ! From leading Brazil to the U20 World Cup in August to assuming the key playmaker role in an Inter team that would have ended up higher in the table if a certain injury didn't impact them considerably. Almost beat out many a senior to a starting spot.

Marcos Assuncao (Palmeiras) - Deserves mention for his never say die attitude with a fading team with nothing to play for months.

    FORWARD :
Neymar (Santos) - As much as he is a whiner and a diver he is also an immense talent and a unanimous choice for the first team. He's had a great year personally even though Santos floundered in the Serie A due to the extended absences of Neymar and Ganso due to the Copa America and then the injury to Ganso. Teams respond differently to his presence in the lineup and there's no greater testament to the danger he poses to opponents than the fact that in any given game, Neymar is marked by more than one player at a time.

Consensus MVP of most Brazilian sports writers. I'll add an American footy watcher to that list ()and jot him down as my pick for MVP as well !!! If he can JUST sort out the diving and whining ......

Leandro Damiao (Internacional) - I put him above Borges because like Neymar, he may have had some absences from the Serie A this season but whenever he was healthy and playing, he was a force to be reckoned with. Like Neymar, opponents knew who would get the ball in Inter's attack and despite being geared up to stop him, he scored plenty of goals and created chances for teammates as well.

    Honorable mentions :
Borges (Santos) - Top scorer in the Serie A this season with a record 23 goals but a lot of that credit really goes to Neymar who gave him at least a dozen goals on a platter.
Fred (Fluminense) - Came back from a miserable first half of the season and a mess of a Copa America to go on an unprecedented tear. He scored 17 goals in his final 10 league games this season and finished 2nd in the scoring list with 22 goals.
    ================================================== ======

RobinRS ... a salute to you and your passion and love for all things Brazil !!!! This thread's been absolutely stellar this season. Long may it continue ......

Well UC win 1-0 .. but it was a rather nondescript and undeserved win imho. Espanola can feel justifiably wronged when their go-ahead goal was disallowed.
EVargas was an almost no show in this game. But with the packed schedule UC's played the last few weeks, its somewhat understandable.

UC now have to quickly pivot and focus on the Copa Sudamericana first leg in Quito on Thursday.

UANL v Queretaro in an hour ... a rainy day/night in Austin means we're staying indoors, drinking lots of hot chocolate and overdosing on footy !!!

RobinRS ... a salute to you and your passion and love for all things Brazil !!!! This thread's been absolutely stellar this season. Long may it continue ......

Hi RT great post, I have never been able to split posts, for a reply, so I will have to reply bit by bit.

I have the next year agenda, and sad to say, it will not give the players much rest. I'll post it in full later today.

That Flamengo Vasco game was pretty special. I think I reported on it in this thread, as a great "comeback" game. Or am I getting mixed up. I'll have to troll back through the thread.

As for your player list. I agree with most of it, but I also think Felipe of Flamengos has been superb in goal, behind a poor defence,

Ronaldinho and Texeiras schedule. well I've commented on that so much, I'm sure you know my views agree with yours.

The rest of your list is spot on. and thank you so very much for all the effort you are putting into this thread.

Other posters have been a great, and much appreciated help, thanks to all of them. but RT. you are a STAR here. Thank you.

As to your last comment, The thread would never have been such a success without your, and the other stellar (should that not be Carlsberg?) contributors.

As to my passion for Brasil, It's just a country so full of emotion. Just listen to the Anthem, and the words; it explains the thinking of the "general/normal Brazuca" very well.

I just love the people. There is very little racism here, the "worst" I ever get called is, "Gringo Brazuca", Or "Gringo Liverpool", and allways in good humor.

Yes there are some real, Cs but, I don't bother to mix with them. and you will encounter them wherever you go. Sad fact of life.

As for this thread. Well; let's see if we can keep it running till 2014, It might then go down in the archives of L.F.C. forums, as the biggest and longest ever running threads of all time.

    Fame at last.

Robin .. .thank you for pointing out Felipe's contributions. That was a big fail on my part - as you said - Flamengo's defense had been weak all season and I fell into the trap of finding Felipe "guilty by association". I went back to soccernet and noticed that off all the goalkeepers in Serie A, Felipe made the most saves (135) and was on Globo's weekly XI more often than any other. Felipe deserves to share credit for Flamengo's Copa Lib slot with R10 and Neves ! I've also edited the selection XI accordingly.

As for the thread and my contributions .. its been a load of fun for me and I hope others find my ramblings and game reviews useful. Anyway ... to me this is one of the top threads ANYWHERE and I thank each and every one who has made it what it is and what it will surely continue to be !

In RRS' absence, I hope we'll continue to keep the thread alive and interesting. Other Brazil based posters, please feel free to share facts and trivia of footy in Brazil if you have the time to spare. Many thanks in advance !

    News from Brazil :

    - Looks like Ronaldinho will remain in Flamengo as the club is getting closer to resolving the R$3m in 4 months unpaid salary that is owed to him by the sports management company, Traffic. In a convoluted arrangement, Flamengo was only responsible for 25% of his salary which they've paid. Ronaldinho and his brother/manager Robert Assis have indicated they might join Brazil's other major sports marketing company, 9ine, owned by footballing legend Ronaldo to sort out the funding issues.

Incidentally, this would be yet another major coup for 9ine as they already have Neymar, Ganso, Lucas Moura and MMA champ Anderson Silva as clients.

    - The President of Ceara, relegated last weekend to Serie B, has confirmed that Palmeiras is interested in signing RW Osvaldo. This would be an excellent signing for Palmeiras and a welcome escape for Osvaldo to a "big" club.

    - Palmeiras has already made one big splash in the transfer market by signing Figueirense's LB Juninho (see my Serie A XI) to strengthen their already formidable defense.

    - Leandro Damiao's comments about wanting to focus on Copa Libertadores and London 2012 seemingly gives Internacional hope that they will be able to retain his services through the summer of next year.

    - Kempes dos Santos, the only bright spot in America-MG's valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to avoid relegation is being associated will be headed to the J-League's Cerezo Osaka.

    - Vagner Love has signaled his intent to return to Brazil despite CSKA's qualification into the knockout stages of the Champs League.

Tonight's the First Leg of the Copa Sudamericana and it likely poses the absolute toughest challenge for favorites Universidad Chile. I think LDU Quito will up to the challenge of holding UC's vaunted attack and hold them to a draw.

    Copa Sudamericana :
Would it surprise anyone that Eduardo Vargas scored last night against LDU Quito in their first leg 1-0 win over the Ecuadorian champions ? While the goal continues his very hot streak in the tourney (9 goals so far), yesterday's game was particularly noteworthy for two reasons - Vargas' continued calm and precise goalscoring despite a very quiet start by his standards and his and UC's incredible fitness late in the game at the Estadio Casa Blanca in Quito which is situated at about 9500 feet.

UC's manager, Jorge Sampaoli showed his respect and concern for the danger posed by Quito's dynamic attacking trio of Hernan Barcos, Claudio Bieler and Ezequiel Gonzalez by starting with a 3-5-2 formation to effectively disrupt Gonzalez's passing. The strategy paid off and much of the credit for last night's win should go to the UC defensive midfielder Albert Acevedo who basically marked Gonzalez out of the game by disrupting the link-up play from the Quito midfield to attack and left Barcos and Bieler (later Luis Bolanes) on virtual islands up front alonside the UC defensive trio of Marcos and Osvaldo Gonzalez (not related) and Jose Rojas.

Quito had a golden chance in the 42nd minute to go ahead but Barcos, the 2nd leading scorer in the tournament uncharacteristically skied an absolute sitter. Inevitably Vargas broke the deadlock just a minute later from a pinpoint Charles Aranguiz pass that he won by outpacing the Liga defenders and then quickly (and very calmly) rounding Liga GK Alexander Dominguez for the game winning shot.

Despite losing Bieler to injury at the end of the half, Quito came out firing with Luis Bolanos, arguably their 2nd best attacker who's been plagued with injuries this season, but the dogged defense of UC's managed to hold them at bay while their midfield began to impose their quick tempo passing on the game - a testament to their fitness as most visiting teams pretty much resort to pulling back and playing defense in the latter stages of the game due to the altitude sapping their energy. In fact, UC looked even more threatening than LDU in the 2nd half of the game and created several more chances that went begging.

While Vargas' goal was the obvious positive on the day, it was UC's defense that really deserves the credit for stifling the excellent LDU attack and my pick for MOTM is Albert Acevedo with his excellent midfield work. UC's captain and left-back, Jose Rojas as well as GK Johnny Herrera (yes that's his name!) deserve some plaudits as well. Herrera pulled off some excellent saves but was also aided by some very shocking finishing by LDUQ.

Highlights (please let me know if this link doesn't work for any reason) : http://msn.foxsports.com/fse/copasud...to-vs-udechile

    Mexico :
29 years after their last title, UANL Tigres are halfway to the Apertura 2011 title after beating Santos Laguna 1-0 away. Damien Alvarez's 8th minute goal proved enough against a Santos team that played with a man down for more than an hour following the dismissal of Juan Pablo Rodriguez.

Sunday night's 2nd leg at Nueve Leon promises an absolutely insane atmosphere as UANL's title starved fans will pack the Estadio Universitario. With us having waited 21 years and counting, I know we can empathize with these fans. Good luck to them.

Ty Ben ... don't know if you can get a stream for tomorrow's Mexican Primera finale but I think it'll be well worth it. Just like us, in 29 years Tigres have been very close a couple of times but just fell short of that crucial last step. Santos won't roll over for them though and it will be a tense affair.

Hi RT, enjoying your reports as always.
Looking forward to your analysis on the mexican play off. I know it ended 3-1 with a couple of red cards but that's all; its like seeing newspaper headlines but not knowing the story behind it
Overall, i think it has been a good half season following SoAM football, more so through this thread. Flam made it to the Copa spots, and our competitors both in EPL & Europe were denied Neymar. Howeva, i do hope we get either of Lucas or Leandro, even if it is on pre-contract basis before the olympiks, plus of course vargas!
Seeing as you are a footie addict and most leagues over there are ended, what do you normally do with all the extra time?

Hi RT and Robin(we miss you mate).
What a game it was, like i said great season in America, just sit back and enjoy the show.
Like the Corinthians game it was a very emotional day for Tigres winning after so many years.
What can i as a football fan ask for more in a game ? Goals, red cards a
penalty miss, you name it this game had it.
When santos scored you could feel the sadness thru the TV and when they
equalized and went ahead i jumped like i'm their fan.
God i miss this kind of football atmosphere in Europe.
You only have it in Germany becuase they have standing terraces imo.

Hey shmar ... thanks .. yes I do have a report from last night's game but I ended up watching it on DVR at 10:30pm after the kids went to bed ! Dec/Jan are the months when I take in a ton of 2nd tier PL, Bundesliga, La Liga or Serie A games. Not many other occasions or reasons to watch Inter-Fiorentina. I even catch an Eredivisie or Portuguese Liga game on ESPN3. Along with the magic of LFC's win on Saturday, the FiFA Club World Cup will do for my footie fix this week. Of course, I also have a full-time job and I also moonlight as a musical jingle producer - laugh it up but hey, the money pays for my South American footie subscriptions so I'm willing to sell a little bit of my soul !

Then there's always the off-season player movements to follow. I'm increasingly certain Vargas will move because as much money as their qualification to the Copa Lib or their Copa Sudamericana win will generate for Universidad Chile, they just won't be able to compete wage wise with a determined European team.

Brazilian players are in a different boat. I am almost equally certain that Lucas Moura won't be leaving Sao Paulo despite all the enticements at the moment. Damiao's situation is intriguing and his decision may has to weigh out the fact that Internacional doesn't have the earning potential of SPFC and Porto Alegre has nowhere near the financial muscle of Sao Paulo against Inter's qualification to the Copa Lib and his becoming a client of 9ine (Ronaldo's sports marketing company). 9ine is very confident that they can market Brazil's top in-country sports personalities through the 2014 WC and perhaps will succeed in convincing Damiao to eschew a few extra millions and stay home. Interestingly, they have none of the non-resident Brazilian players on their client list.

Its just a hunch but I have a feeling Leandro may stay home until next summer to honor Inter's request.

On to 2nd leg of the Mexican Apertura 2011.
Yes - the Mexican final was a red card fest; quite disappointing end to a very good and fairly drama free post-season. In the spring, the Clausura semifinal between Morelia and Cruz Azul turned into a farce because of all the on-pitch violence, the brawling and subsequent sending offs. Watching the Primera can be a fantastic experience. The quality of play in the top games can be top notch. But the ill-discipline, the violence both on and off the pitch and blatant diving/simulation can be equally frustrating.

    Cheerleaders certainly help.

With the eyes of the entire country on the game last night, there was some rather disgraceful behavior from a few of the players but to me it all started with a harsh sending off from "tough guy" referee and Mexican soap opera star () Marco Antonio Rodriguez that left Santos Laguna without their starting GK Osvaldo Sanchez. While Sanchez did go in with both feet towards Tigres striker Danilinho, he made incidental contact which was then vastly overplayed. At worst it was a yellow to go with the penalty. To add to their woes, Santos had to replace forward Carlos Quintero to bring in backup GK, Miguel Becerra so the burden of overturning the deficit would fall squarely on the shoulder of Santos striker Oribe Peralta. Some justice was found in that the consequent penalty kick was very weakly taken by Lucas Lobo and easily parried away by Becerra.

Down 1-0 from the first leg, there was almost no coming back being a man down but Santos bravely attacked the Tigres goal and were surprisingly rewarded with the lead through a 30th minute strike by Peralta against the run of play. Lobo looked like he had redeemed himself just a few minutes later with what looked like an excellent goal but he did have his boots too high near a defender so the goal was disallowed.

Tigres eventually made the man-advantage count and Hector Mancilla's 51st minute header put the capacity crowd of 45,000+ in a frenzy. The pantomime villain (or hero to Tigres fans everywhere) Danilinho scored a 64th minute goal that took Tigres one step closer to the title and within minutes the game degenerated into a full brawl when center-back Felipe Baloy was sent off for a two footed slide on Israel Jimenez that didn't really connect. Jimenez was also promptly sent off for instigating the fighting that cleared the Santos bench. Alan Pulido's 84th minute goal was just the icing on the cake.

In the end, the better team won - albeit they took a bumpy road (4 reds and 10 yellow cards over the two legs) to get past a fiery Santos team. I must admit I'm pretty happy for Tigres fans - after all they've waited 29 long years for this.

All 11 minute highlights of the game. Interested to read what others think of the sending offs.
