Pastore scored a brilliant header - the Sheikh's of Paris are up 1-0 on Lille.

I am not exactly sure how the Brazilian league works. Whoever wins the Sao Paulo-Santos match goes on to the finals where if they win they are champions or what?

Yes - the winner of this game will go on to play the Winner of the Guarani-Ponte Preta "Huge Underdog" semifinal. All that to win a Sao Paulo State Championship.

Then in May the National League (Campeanato Serie A) starts in earnest and will run through early December.

Wow they play a lot of football in Brazil.

Is the Campeanto Serie A the major league or is second behind the state leagues?

Neymar fell awkwardly on his shoulder. Then seemed to have trouble breathing. With him though ... its always a bit of the Prima Donna.
Oh he's made a miraculous recovery and coming back onto the pitch !

If it is not Lucas scoring, no one on Sao Paulo looks a danger. Need to bring on Luis Fabiano.

The Serie A is the National League so is now considered more prestigious and is financially far more lucrative. There was a time when that wasn't the case - the logistical nightmares of getting across the country meant that the Serie A really didn't assume its current importance until the age of common and cheap air travel in the late 50's.

The State championships have more history and tradition - some like the Sao Paulo and Rio championships are a 100+ yrs old.

Sakho sent off in Lille !! Penalty to Lille - here we go ! Hazard converts the penalty. 1-1 Lille !!
Gremio scores and its 1-1 at Inter. Fernando created the goal with a fine free kick that rebounded off the post and was cleaned up by Werley.

    Vamos Vamos Nacional !!!! - still 0-0.

Bota 3- Vasco 0 - Maicosuel scored the 3rd in the 54th minute.

And Willian Jose (on my 5 under 25 list ) brings SPFC a goal closer with a fine finish. !! SPFC 1 - Santos 2.

Sao Paulo denied a penalty(right decision) but looked almost the same as Santos' penalty. Both were accidental contact.

Yeah, I really rate a lot of the Sao Paulo players, it is just some were playing badly today. Getting Jadson off has changed this team around.

My goodness Lille - PSG is an absolute barnburner of a game. Lille has taken the lead - Eden Hazard with the assist. Such a BRILLIANT talent !!

Yowa - Casimiro has been quite disappointing today.

    Yeah he has.

Man every time a Santos player falls down, he gives a free kick.

3-1 Santos, Neymar's shot hits the hands of the Sao Paulo keeper and goes in

So here's the rundown of today's footy madness :
Santos advance to the Sao Paulo State Championship.
Internacional are Gaucho State Champs after beating Gremio 2-1. The highlights right now indicate that it was, without a doubt, the Leandro Damiao show.
Botafogo are Rio State winners. 3-1 over Vasco who lost both the Taca Guanabara final and the Taca Rio final. But Loco Abreu - saludo ! It was an autumnal renaissance season for the aging striker.
Nacional squeaked by 1-0 over El Tanque Sisley with a late own goal.

Lille- PSG ... what a brilliant game. Look at this assist from Hazard !!!

I didn't catch Udinese-Lazio but I read that it was mayhem at the end. Also, America-MG pipped Cruzeiro to the Mineiro championship 2-1 with a goal in the 92nd min.

i think that the fan likes more winning like this in the hour at least uruguayan fan is like this

rustachio as to abreu in the national team i think that is time for him to step aside and leave the place to abel hernandez, i never liked him for been fan of the money and not a nacional fan, telling that he will comeback after de world cup (yess and he still in botafogo) telling that he wants that peñarol won the libertadores (seriously, a nacional fans says this?) and many other attitudes

I liked the Vicente Sanchez type of player that reject offers of tree times more money only for the club, or Alvaro Recoba that reject an offer of 3 millons!!! 10 months!!! just to stay and be champion whit Nacional

Can't blame you for disliking Abreu on that matter - Vicente Sanchez and Recoba didn't just come back to retire in Uruguay - they came back to help Nacional win ! But from a purely footballing perspective - no denying he's had a very good year.

Hope you made some money on that bet GCG.

I didn't watch the UC-Colo Colo game but then someone posted this on YouTube. Terrible defending by CC in general but a couple of the goals were the result of ruthless finishing by UC. Highlights : Cinco Goles !

10 mins of highlights from Sunday's Nacional's late win over El Tanque Sisley.

Hi Mari ... looks like it will be a very tight race to the finish in the Uruguayan Primera !

Aside from the good Boca win over UEspanola (they got the vital away goal!), boring Corinthians are playing at Emelec (0-0 at HT/typical Corinthians!) and the big game of the night is Vasco v Lanus (2-0 Vasco so far).

Last night Velez Sarsfield went to Medellin and surprised favored Atl. Nacional 1-0. The winner came from Ivan Bella, Velez's 22 yr old midfielder. Dorlan Pabon's tendency to shoot a lot works well when he's scoring - but when he's cold (as he was last night), it leaves out the rest of his fellow attackers without much to do but ball watch and really breaks the fluidity of the attacks. And as the competition has moved into the latter games, I've seen defenders converge on Pabon; fully aware that his first tendency is to shoot at goal regardless of degree of difficulty.

Jorge Burruchaga's Libertad team went to Mexico City and secured a vital away goal and the draw against Cruz Azul. The Blue Crosses, having just been beaten to the 8th and final Mexican Primera playoff spot to Jaguares thanks to the heroics of Jackson Martinez last weekend, are now looking to the Copa to salvage what's left of a promising start to 2011-2012.

Last year I mentioned Cerro Porteno's Juan Iturbe as the best young Paraguayan player to watch in the Copa Lib. At the end of that competition, he moved to Porto for £3.7m. Iturbe, at 18, has played 44 mins in the Portuguese League/Cup. This year its 17 year old Mauro Caballero's turn. Apparently he will be moving to Benfica this summer when he turns 18 but Chelsea and Bayern have apparently shown interest in the lad as well. But maybe by mentioning him here as a young player to watch we can say he's caught Liverpool's attention as well ! Mauro didn't play last night by the way - wasn't even on the bench. But he was a super sub in several of the games in the Group stage of the Copa.

What's in the water in South America ? The talent train keeps on chugging unabated.

All eyes in Latin America (and some in North America ) will be on the sole Copa Lib game on tonight - Universidad de Chile plays Deportivo Quito in the altitude of Quito (2900 metres). The good news for UC is that RW Junior Fernandez has recovered from his hamstring injury and will be back for this game although UC's hero the last time they were in Quito (vs LDU Quito), Alberto Acevedo, is out with an injury. Their 18 year old CB Igor Lichnovsky will start in his place. Tip my hat to Jorge Sampaoli - that's fearless coaching !

Kick-off is at 7PM US CDT (1 AM UK Time).

    Deportivo Quito 4 U de Chile 1

Deportivo destroyed the U whit the advetnage of the high, unffair for me, is not fair for players that are not adapted to this terms to play like this, this is the reason why liga de quito get the copa libertadores and copa sudamericna, in this last beat 5 1 in quito tu fluminense and in brasil they lost 3 0! , but conmebol can't do anything what they would do? deny to teams of Ecuador play in conmebol turnaments? imposible, maybe remove the way that finals are taken in southamerica and could be like in Europe whit a city per year, i can say by mi own experience (i go to quito once) i walk 1 hour and i had trouble breathing, imagine someone who is playing football

Some transfer news coming out of France..Hazard is definitely moving to Manchester in the summer..City in pole position to land him according to L'Equipe. Don't think we'll be able to compete on wages as it is already as he makes 6m euros a year with Lille right now and will be looking at a substantial increase in wages after his next move.

Thanks Mari - What a mess of a game for UC.

I travel to Colorado about once or twice a year for business and it always takes me a day or two to acclimate myself to the 1600+ metre altitude of Colorado Springs (gorgeous town by the way!) so I can imagine what a struggle that altitude is for anyone expecting to play 90 minutes at Bielsa/Sampaoli's style of football !!

Sampaoli was sent off in the first half and had to be forced off the sidelines by a pair of Ecuadorian policemen and, on the pitch, their defense was a complete shambles of their normally organized self without the injured Acevedo. UC came out with their familiar 3-5-2 formation that was very successful last year in their 1-0 away win against LDU Quito. But it was very apparent by the 15th minute that the entire team had not acclimated to the altitude this time and without the disciplined cover of Acevedo (MOTM last December), captain and CB Jose Rojas, RB Osvaldo Gonzales, and the young Igor Lichnovsky at LB all struggled mightily against the pace and fitness advantage of Quito's LW, Matias Alustiza (MOTM), CF Fidel Martinez and RM Juan Paredes.

Up front, UC were completely out of sync - Junior Fernandez on the right seemed tentative in his first game back from his hamstring injury (which he re-aggravated on the night) and Henriquez on the left was even more ineffective. I don't recall another major game of UC's in their present run where they've been so anemic in attack.

Sampaoli seemed to be out of his depth and put off by his sending off and his substitutions were ineffective. He also didn't make a tactical change of note to shore up his defense after the team had secured the vital away goal. A 3 goal outburst from UC in Santiago would not be out of the realm of possibility but their midfield stars will have to dominate the game in a way they certainly didn't last night.

I don't see CONMEBOL taking away home-away games in the Group stages. And with the costs of travel - having the final at a single neutral city is likely a non-starter as a significant contingent of each team's fans would be unable to travel to enjoy the game. At least that's what I've gathered in seeing the relatively much smaller number of away fans at each of these games.

pete752 ... as much as everyone talks about Hazard's maturity issues (and there are a few), having a player like Luis Suarez has shown that its better to have a player who plays with skill and passion on the pitch even if there are some maturity questions around them at times. I rate Hazard highly but its not to be. So onwards and upwards to other players - Lucas Moura perhaps ?
