What are you looking for Ayles? Are you on your own or family, kids etc? Is it a work thing? In Liverpool? What type of things are your priorities for where you live? I live in Liverpool, can help you on this side of the water but I know the Wirral is similar in the respect that, there are some lovely areas aswell as some you'd need to stay well away from!
Formby is nice![]()
Lived on the Wirral all my life, and its probably like anywhere else, some lovely areas some real dumps. was brought up in Bebington, and anywhere from Bromborough, Bebington, Prenton, Tranmere, Eastham, is pretty ok. I'm currently living in Rock Ferry, bit of a rough area but if you keep your head down its fine. West wirral tends to be the snooty side, (Heswall, Caldy etc), and just try to stay as far away from Neston as you can. Very much a local place for local people! (most with 6 toes on each foot!)
Decent selection of schools, loads of pubs, Birkenhead town centre has loads of shops, and getting the train to Liverpool takes no more than half an hour max depending on where you get it from. Good bus and train service to Chester as well.
Hope this helps!
As said previously I can't really comment on the Wirral as my geography of their is not too great. I've lived and worked across many areas of merseyside and have lived in Crosby for the last three years. It is worth a look around here pal as it could fit your budget (I'd consider renting first) and there are some really good schools around here. It is about 20 mins from Liverpool city centre in the car or very easy access via train or bus. The Wirral has its benefits, some of my work colleagues live there, but you are a bit isolated.

What's Garston like?
my eldest kids like to jump on buses and trains where we live now and go into town etc; get the feeling it might not be so easy - what's birkenhead like; is it like shopping centre ?
would you do me a favour and ask your mates over the next few weeks who say have families similar to mine and post back in here sometime - that would be really great mate.
cheers, ayles![]()
Ayles based on what you're saying there I'd say you'd be better in a place like Crosby or Formby. Great public access into the city centre with stuff like Liverpool one, cinemas, meeting friends etc. Also great for you and your missus as they are nice places to live (low crime etc) and 12 quid taxi ride into Liverpool city centre for meal etc. There are lovely local places as well. I know I sound bias here but a problem with the Wirral is not during the day, but at night. If you go to Liverpool city centre for an evening, it is seriously expensive to get home.
Keep us informed what you are thinking about doing in this thread, if I can help I will.
Hello Ayles. I've lived on the Wirral all my life and like anywhere it has it's ups and downs. The East side of the Peninsula is your busy go, all systems ahead side whilst the west side is the quiet layed back sometimes snooty side but still delightful. Why not look in the middle. Irby, Greasby, Upton. Really nice areas and only 1 junction on the motorway from the Wallasey tunnel to get in to town and 10 minutes from both Birkenhead and Wallasey for the kids etc..and a stones throw from Arrowe Park Hospital.
Hope that helps![]()

Maghull is ok, I live there, nice town centre , 20 minutes on the train to central, or 30 mins in a car. It has 3 high schools within the town, and for your wife is in the middle about from 3 hospitals (15 mins in car) plus a psychiatric hospital at the edge of Maghull town. The prices vary from 100,000 grand houses up to top end of the market depending on how much you are willing to spend. Lots of places to let too.
It's north Liverpool, close to Ormskirk and Aintree at opposite sides of the A59
