Everytime I turn on my laptop it comes up with the initial screen that says packard bell, press F2 to blah blah, but once this screen goes off, a little flashing cursor appears in the top left and stays like that

Tried turning it off and on a million times and taking the battery out, taking out the RAM and putting it back in, all sorts, NOTHING!

    Any ideas?

I know the exact answer to your question and i would have gave you the answer if only you put all the exclamation marks after please instead of help. Because if you put them after please i would have thought you were begging for my help. But as you have put them after ''HELP'' i now think you are shouting at me so i am walking out of this thread and shutting the door in a ***** fit.

Tried it, it doesn't do anything, and it's been enabled in the BIOS bit.

This is what I did but it's different on other makes of computer so you're probably going to get stuck, but still, try this:

Unplug any unnecessary hardware from USB e.g. printer, usb flash drive
Press the button to enter set-up (probably F2)
Go to Boot Device Configuration in set up (or 'BDC')
    Select 'Hard Disk Boot Priority'
For first boot device choose 'Hard Disk'
    Then press F10

Make sure you select the primary boot device as CD-Rom drive in the BIOS; or try pressing F10 or F12 on the Bios flash screen to change boot device.

I've had the same problem with my laptop mate and have ended up having to reboot my laptop to it's original factory settings, not saying you'll have to do the same though.

Er...Have you tried repeatedly pressing F8 on startup.

If this does nothing, try holding F8 when powered down and keep it held until the startup screen appears

    Still having the problem?

As above, in Bios set your CD-ROM as primary boot device. Then get a Windows DVD (same version as what you have) from somewhere. When the laptop starts it should say: "Press any key to boot from CD..." right after the POST screen, do so. Then there'll be options to repair your installation. Start-up repair should be first attempted if that doesn't work. Then a restore if you have it available. Last resort a reinstall.

If you've got information on there that can't be lost, then you will have to take the laptop hard drive out, plug it into a desktop PC, copy the information off then you're free to do a full reinstall. This is of course if no repair options work. Good luck.

Actually, if there is important info on there, he can use a Linux Live CD and connect an external hd to back it up. If it is a non restore cd, you can reinstall, and it will back the data up to Windows.Old.

I would personally try a linux live cd, to test that there is not a problem. If you can use F8 repeatedly, try booting into safe mode. If that works, try rebooting with F8 again, and try Last know good configuration that worked.

Let us know how you get on fellow Red!

How mysterious, can't imagine what problem you're having that would stop the motherboard from going through initial steps to even boot. Anything virus related wouldn't set in until after it's gone through POST and tried to read from the hard drive. Some bootup problems can be reset by taking out the CMOS battery in a desktop PC, not sure if that's applicable with a laptop. Have you tried resetting BIOS settings within the options menu?

So you was on BBC news, you shut down your computer and now it won't come on again. .

You must have done something for it to not startup again. Was anything being installed at the time or was you doing something you shouldn't have been doing at the time. .

Well, if you can't get your laptop going again you're probably going to have to reboot your laptop again to original default settings. Fear not, if it does come to this, get someone to extract all your personal data off your hard drive first before rebooting. If you have a recovery disc, just boot from there, if you don't, you can always order one.

Before using a recovery CD, you could maybe use this. Just follow the instructions on how to install after downloading the program. With this program, you can do lots, recover lost data, recover hard disk partitions etc...

There are maybe other ways to fix your laptop, more easier ways too, but I'm no computer genius. .
