In all seriousness a 5 match series would be great.
These two sides are the best test sides in the world at the moment despite the ranking placing India second (I think).
I think the SA's bowlers are much more suited to England's conditions then India's bowlers were and should a be a tight series.
I would go for an England win just because we are imperious on our own turf, but you never know in test cricket as the Pakistani tour showed.
I would probably include Australia in my Top 3 test nations - simply as you can never rule them out, even though they are going through changes at the moment.
As to the Eng - SA series, 5 would be great but there are very few 5 test series these days, which is a pity. I have no doubt it will be very close .. we have comparable batting line-ups, but I would give SA the edge in the bowling department at the moment. Obviously, England have home advantage, but the wickets are quite similar to those that we have in SA - certainly not as radically different as playing on the sub-continent.
Am really looking forward to it, especially as there is a very small time difference and I will be able to watch the matches, unlike the time difference between SA and New zealand.
That's funny cause I would give our bowling department the edge....![]()
But this backs up my point cause it is so tight to call a winner. A 3 match series could end up 2-1 too someone when a 5 match series could set it self up for a 3-2 win to the other team or a 2-2 draw.
It's like in tennis, a grandslam is out of 5 sets so makes the extra bit of difference.
Rahul Dravid is expected to announce his retirement from international cricket tomorrow. As someone of Indian origin, he was probably the greatest Indian batsman I ever had the privilege to watch for India as I rate him even more highly than Sachin in the test version of the game.
An impeccable guy on and off the field too, I'm not sure we'll ever be able to replace him. Respect.
Interesting test developing between SA and NZ .. SA have the upper hand, but for how long?
Nice series win for SA in NZ.
How are England doing vs Sri Lanka, Liverpoolforme?![]()
Another **** poor batting display from England.
192 all out FFS!
But Swann has given them a chance getting 4 Wickets in the 2nd innings, Sri Lanka lead by 209 runs, with 5 wickets in hand.
England cannot let the lead get above 250.
Yeah, it is getting worse, and we're shocking against spin.
Really feel sorry for the England bowlers, all of them have performed in the last two series but because of the ineptitude of the batsmen it has been for nothing.
Really hope at least one of them can get a significantly high score.
Yep, I have to agree that your bowlers have looked very good .. and varied.
Your guys must be looking forward to playing us later this year. We have a predominantly pace attack but no top quality spinner. Your batsmen will prefer that, even though we have a scary attack. We bat long as well .. will be a great series.
Here we go.......unlikely, but do-able if they get themselves played in. Wouldn't bet on it though!
We are simply pathetic in the subcontinent. Batters need to buck up.
Strange really cause if you had to predict it would be the bowlers who struggle, not the batters.
The bowlers have done extremely well. They have pretty much single handedly kept us within touching distance in this match and against Pakistan (all 3 matches)
I will eat my hat, t-shirt and shoes if we manage to knock these runs off.
So that's tea and England have reached 27-0, with Strauss on 14 and Cook on 13.
A long long way to go but that's all we could ask for at tea.
How the hell can he overturn the umpires on field decision based on that?!
Ridiculous decision.
Strauss gone and that's game set if i'm honest.
That's now 47 test innings without a 100.
I wonder how long that form can continue before Cook get's the nod as captain? And then I assume he would be dropped.....
Strauss seems to have a mental issue with having to prove himself with big silly shots as if to be a tough guy or something, and to unsettle the other team.
Remember the awful hook/pull shot that saw him caught for a duck at the start of the Ashes, or many of the "take THIS" shots he seems to do just after he's got himself in.
Skippers should not play foolish shots like that.
PS - I still think we'll win this test though.
We lost the Asia Cup final so I'm not happy. As for England, is Cricket really dying in the UK? Huge investment on South African talent, why?
Close of play.
Hopefully our two saffa's will do it for us, need some runs. Game on.
