In NZ rugby they have a great concept called the Ranfurly Shield. It's a challenge system, so if the holder loses then the challenger takes the shield. Simple, but very cool. It makes big games out of what may otherwise have been small games, and gives small clubs the chance to write their own history (The equivalent of Swansea holding it for 6 weeks and keeping it over summer)

Reckon it would work in England. The holder at the end of the year could play off with the LC winner for a Europa place. Anyway I know it will never happen, so I decided to institute a "fantasy" one. I drew the initial holder which was Newcastle.

I will keep all posted with the progress.

    The rules are as follows:
-All competitive games (home and away) against other PL teams are challenges (incl FA Cup and League Cup)
-Games against lower division or European teams are NOT challenges
-If the challenger wins the game (including on pens) they get the shield
-If the Defender wins or draws, they retain it.
-If the shield holder at the end of the season is relegated, they relinquish the shield to the winner of the Championship who are one of the promoted teams to take their place

    Current Shield Details:
    Holder: Aston Villa
    Successful defences: 1
    Next challenge: Arsenal (h)

Chelsea (Tenures, Successful defences this time, total): (2,1,1)

It's an interesting idea (this fantasy version).

Just curious, in real life, how does it work when a team loses their title? I mean, in theory, if the matches are already scheduled, the title could be passed around other teams in such a way that they may not get another title challenge for years (decades, even) even though they are the best team.

    Am I missing something here?

By my calculations, Liverpool could win the shield from Utd on the 11th February.

So we have that to look forward to...

Oh come on it's not that difficult.

The Champions hold the title until they are defeated, whereby the victorious team takes possession of the Championship.

    Just like WWE.

Hi all, next challenge up for the Toon is away to QPR.
    My thoughts:
-Tough challenge, I think the shield could be on the move... [just when I was starting to feel a connection with the black and whites]
-Can Barton help his new club wrestle some (virtual) silverware off his old?
-Geordie fans are loving there start to the season, a 3 nil win would send them third
-But are still snakey about Mike Ashley keeping THAT 35m quid in his pocket
-QPR feel-good factor is running hot with the arival of Barton, SWP and Luke Young. The next few games are big for the R's

Next couple of challenges if Newcastle successfully defend are:
    A Villa (a)
    Blackburn (h)

If QPR manage to pull it off, next up will be:
    Wolves (a)
    A Villa (h)

So if QPR win, then Wolves beat QPR, we'll be in with a chance of winning it in 2 weekend's time.

herbeer - would the end of season winner be the team in possession at that point or the team with most succesful defences?

It actually does make non-interesting games (a bit) more interesting.

Still don't think we will be seeing it until the 11th February though. But I suppose I should be going for QPR tonight then since it is the fastest route to us getting it.

Only just notcied this concept. Seems decent, makes one of the games every week alot more exciting.

Tonights game for example would be watched by many more if the "shield" was actually on the line.

The only downside, if you could call it that, is that some/alot of teams may not even get a chance to play for it.

Maybe the OP could keep a list of each game throughout the season, where the shield os on the line, and add up at the end of the season who and how many times some teams have played for it?

    Intresting idea.

What about the scenario of say, There are 11 games left, Chelsea hold it and win/draw 10 games, therefore retaining the trophy, On the final day of the season they play Swansea who have already been relegated, And swansea cause an upset by beating them, So therefore Swansea are the holders, They drop into Championship and dont come back for 30 years, What happens????

Well thought out, i dont know the actual answer but a guess would be... if a relegated team holds it, they give it up to the last holders, who are still in the league? or possibly let the title winners have it for the first game of new season?

    Can I ask...

Was Newcastle a random pick? Or is there some justification to it?

Great idea though, would love to see it in place
