In NZ rugby they have a great concept called the Ranfurly Shield. It's a challenge system, so if the holder loses then the challenger takes the shield. Simple, but very cool. It makes big games out of what may otherwise have been small games, and gives small clubs the chance to write their own history (The equivalent of Swansea holding it for 6 weeks and keeping it over summer)
Reckon it would work in England. The holder at the end of the year could play off with the LC winner for a Europa place. Anyway I know it will never happen, so I decided to institute a "fantasy" one. I drew the initial holder which was Newcastle.
I will keep all posted with the progress.
The rules are as follows:
-All competitive games (home and away) against other PL teams are challenges (incl FA Cup and League Cup)
-Games against lower division or European teams are NOT challenges
-If the challenger wins the game (including on pens) they get the shield
-If the Defender wins or draws, they retain it.
-If the shield holder at the end of the season is relegated, they relinquish the shield to the winner of the Championship who are one of the promoted teams to take their place
