May Mahlangu not a prolific striker but at 23 years old, 5ft 8in this South African attacking midfielder playing for Helsingborgs IF , was voted the best player of the year in the Swedish Allsvenskan League. His strike rate thus far is 4 league goals (2011/2012)

Of the strikers I would go for either Bas Dost/ Luuk de Jong or both, with perhaps the man mountain of swedish striker Mathias Ranegie. at 27yrs old and 6ft 5in weighing in at a hefty 92kg no wonder his bulldozed his way to 21 goals in what is as hard a tackling league as the english premiership., he would come in as fifth striker though. behind Suarez, Carroll, either or Bas Dost/ Luuk de Jong and Bellamy.

Midfielders not much in the above the only obvious one is Eden Hazard, but are the chances of getting him?

Well done sir. My only criticism is that information from the Russian and Portuguese leagues would probably be more applicable than what's going on in Sweden.

For me, Lewandowski is the most interesting of the bunch but I am a bit of a sucker for the Dutch strikers. I think we missed the boat on Huntelaar. I would have signed him two seasons ago when he was leaving AC Milan. I think at this point he's settled in Germany.

No I'm not Swedish, but there are a few good Swedish players out there, and I thought it would be good to see what they have to offer.

I think it could be Maxi's last season with us, while reports state that Kuyt is not happy sitting on the bench, he wants to play every game, and when you get to 30 you need games to stay match fit. I can't see Kuyt playing every game while KK is looking at the future and wants young players. The senior players will be used less and less and I cant see Kuyt staying, with new younger faster players coming in, if not in the summer perhaps end of next season he could be moving on. Bellamy has knee problems and will be used less to save him.

I would not mind a young dutch striker in the mould of Bas Dost (22yr old 6ft 3in) and/ or Luuk De Jong (21yr old 6ft 2in). or polish striker Robert Lewandowski (23 yr old 5ft 11in). They all young and can score goals. de Jong is considered the better player while Dost is seen to sulk due to former Manager Ron Jans tough management style. Dost even took Heerenveen to court to get out of his contract. He lost but Heerenveen let their coach go, due to problems with relations with the team. He is neck and neck with de Jong for number of goals scored this season though. 22 goals for Bas Dost and 20 goals for Luuk de Jong.

My outside choices are Robert Lewandowski and Olivier Giroud (25yr old 6ft 3in), Lewandowski has scored 16 goals and Olivier Giroud 17 goals this season thus far.

I just looked on transfermarkt.com and it has a list of the 'most potent strikers' which basically is the: amount of goals scored x the difficulty of the league

So the premier league is factor 2 for e.g where as the dutch league is 1.5.

I thought this method was quite a good way of identifiying some potential goal poacher targets and these are the ones that really stood out to me as players that aren't at top top teams yet are scoring a lot of goals...

De Jong and Doumbia would be really good & relatively inexpensive options and both are young players who know how to put the ball in the net. Lewandowski is a nice player too, but he might not want to leave BD, esp if they win the title and end up in the CL again. James Rodriguez might be the next Falcao, but Porto won't sell him on the cheap. And neither Soldado or Cavani will come cheap either.

Giuseppi Rossi is available for 15M, and Klass Jan Huntelaar is available for 17M, if we do not sign one of these ( IMO we should get both ) then we are failures in the transfer market.

Many have been complaining about the quality of signings that we have made due to a lack of immediate returns, and I must confess that I to have been frustrated at times. Although after writing-off the season quite a while ago I found that watching the team progress, be it with little steps, has been interesting. It has also given me time to study this so-called moneyball system which FSG uses in baseball. I must confess I'm not sure how they apply it to football, but one would have thought that for strikers they would look at players playing in average teams/ clubs with a good goal to game conversion rate. FSG has been on record as stating that they also look at future resale possibilities which means the age of the player should come into play. That is why I think why we targeted Andy Carroll cause he had scored about 13 league goals in 11 games, which is 1.18 goals per game before his move to Anfield.

Huntelaar has a high goal to game conversion rate of 0.83 goals per game, however his age might count against him if the moneyball system is strictly applied.

Looking at the ages of these players and possibilities of actually acquiring them I would say that the Dutch based players stand out the most. Bas Dost has a higher conversion rate than Cristiano Ronaldo, except of cause that Bas Dost is an out-and-out striker while Ronaldo and Messi are more wingers/ attacking midfielders.

To me Bas Dost and Luuk de Jong fit the moneyball system perfectly, considering age, the teams they play for and their goal conversion rate. I have not included John Guidetti cause his on the books of Manchester City (on loan to Feyenoord). I would rate de Jong above Bas Dost though, as even he admits that De Jong is the more skilful player. But would not mind both in the summer in a cash and player deal swop with Kuyt and Maxi going the other way to the respective Dutch clubs

Not sure,.... while I would not mind him, his age might count against him, if resale value is taken into account. He definitely has the experience and quality. Just not sure how this moneyball system affects things, it throws everything up in the air regarding traditional scouting practices. Just don''t know who, we would be interested in, come the summer we could be faced with players that are not on the list above or any other list for that matter. Just not sure.

Roberto Soldado (26yrs) is not a bad player but his goal to game ratio needs to be higher, in the past three seasons his averaged about 0.55 goals per game.

(2011/2012) this seasons his scored thus far 16 goals in 29 games, with a conversion rate of 0.55 goals per game, for the whole of 2010/2011 it was 18 goals in 34 games, with a conversion rate of 0.53 goals per game, and in 2009/2010 he scored 16 goals in 26 games, with a conversion rate of 0.62 goals per game.

Luuk de Jong is the better of the three of your choices me thinks, while Huntelaar is consistently prolific in front of goal, his age might count against. de Jong is still young with a very good goal to game strike rate, but is also very well known now, with possibly a few suitors, which means that FC Twente will be asking a bit. Bas Dost has an even better strike rate and would probably come cheaper. De Jong, by Bas Dost's own admission is the more technically gifted player.

It will be interesting to see what the summer brings though?

Hazard, but I wouldn't exactly call him a striker. I believe Lewandowski has both them traits but could be wrong.

oh no lol, that would be impressive if we overlooked that he has scored 11 goals in 30 games, thus with a goal to game ratio of 0.37,

His actually now in joint 5th spot with team mate Igor Semshov, who also has 11 goals but is listed higher cause his got 11 goals in 28 games i.e. has a goal to game ratio of 0.39. Prolific they are not but they together contributed 22 goals to their teams goal difference thus far this season. But you right I would give both a miss lol.

I actually think we would have a fairly good chance of bringing Bas Dost from Heerenveen, and/ or Luuk De Jong from FC Twente while both are younger and far more prolific on current form.

Not sure why Cavani would not be interested in Liverpool, they sit in 6th spot while his not as prolific as some make him out to be his goal to game ratio is 0.63. While have not been consistent in the league we have been very competitive in fighting for trophies which all players want at the end of the day, but even if his not interested Bas Dost and Luuk De Jong are more prolific in front of goal.
