There's a good commentary piece underneath that: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17238494

Essentially saying how the government were misled, not just by the South Yorkshire Police, who were largely blamed for the disaster and shifting the blame, but also by the "controversial" Chief Constable from Merseyside Police.

"The prime minister was informed that a senior member of the Merseyside Police directly blamed supporters: "One officer, born and bred in Liverpool, said that he was deeply ashamed to say that it was drunken Liverpool fans who had caused this disaster, just as they had caused the deaths at Heysel."

Sorry, I've just posted in the main Hillsborough truth thread now. I don't know why I started this one. Thanks for this, though. I 'll read that.

born and bred in Liverpool proves nothing but they give the impression that it counts for something in favour of his version.

That article also goes to point out that these were the initial thoughts of people days after the even. They may have gone on to subsequently change their minds or come to different conclusions.

Yeah, I think the main question this raises, is who briefed the Merseyside Chief Constable. If he was there himself, then that's a worrying story, however if, as I imagine, he was briefed by senior officers from the South Yorkshire Police, then it's hardly a story at all, because we already know that's how they were spinning it right from the start.

Is this the Police Constable they are referring to?

It doesn't tell us anything we didn't alredy know. Namely being that there was an immediate attempt to cover up a catastrophic failure from the police by laying the blame at the feet of our fans, and that the govt was more concerned with pushing its own political agenda instead of actually finding the true cause of the disaster.

I expect we will see more "evidence" to support this in the coming months.

Sounds to me like little snippets such as this are being 'released' in an attempt to absolve the government in power at the time.

I think there are going to be a few more 'revalations' like this in the coming weeks.

All in an attempt to shift the blame.

Not particularly surprising, but what is it with this drip-feed of information? It's pathetic and completely inappropriate given the subject matter.

Shocking headline that is, most people will just read the headline and won't bother to read the article.

I wonder why out of all the files, why did this bit get "leaked"

Problem with this story - headline and story is Police said drunk and ticketless fans to blame.

I know theres an analysis which put the police comments into context - ie lies and misinformation. But the headline round the world will be Liverpool fans to blame according to police. Not police lied, misinformed and covered up. ffs!

This will be taken out of context, very misleading headline from the BBC. People need to remember this the first enquiry into ****** Sunday and what was said then, it took over 30 years to get the truth. BBC should be ashamed of itself.

Anyone with half a brain knows what caused the Hillsborough Disaster. The police were to blame and that's the end of it. No amount of dressing it up by the media is going to change that.

I think one of th emajor questions it raises is, just exactly who was being briefed by this mysterious 'Liverpool born and bred' (as if that matters ffs) copper? Because his version of the lies seems to accord awfully closely with Kelvin Mackenzie's...

I think a legal mind should be employed to write a response to the items published today.
It seems to me documents are being leaked out in a particular order to satisfy a political agenda.
My first reaction is that Thatcher is being protected the way things are being released it is trying to show that Thatcher did not pre judge she did not set out to exhonerate the police in spite of the facts she acted the way she did because she was mis informed. Bull she protected the police because the police were looking bad all over the country and could not afford more negative press so the lies were started/

Findings of Taylor report should be the head lines this is looking sinister to me and LFC's legal people should get right on it.

If she was fed shockingly bad intel, it certainly mitigates her handling of the circumstances.

But at the same time, I feel like it was her duty to perform a higher degree of due diligence, and we are all desperate for SOMEBODY to have some accountability and take ownership for the **** that went down.
