Have you ever noticed that you can go on holiday for 2 weeks, drink all day, go out and get absolutely wasted in the night. And then get up the next day and do it all over again. You can do this for 14 days and not get a hangover, when you're on holiday. But you can go out on a Saturday night when you're at home and wake up on the Sunday morning with a massive hangover.

    Why is this?

Maybe something to do with the humidity levels? Does that even make sense? I don't know.

I drink water constantly, especially if I plan on drinking a lot of beers that night and throw in a few chewable vitamin C chewables before bed and I am usually good the next day.
Now if I mix my drinks as I do like scotch then I more than likely feel rough the next day.

I would imagine it's continued drinking and lack of sleep. Don't give your body time to get hungover. Also you drink more fluids in hot countries so that would help. I believe you eat less in higher temperatures too so maybe your body retains nutrients etc. better?

On holidays I find the sun and swimming help me work off a hangover quick enough ,and I just get up and get on with things. At home though it's very easy to just lay about lazy and feel worse

I've only been on lads holidays , where you role in at sunrise, and then are back out on it again before your hangover sets In, your topping up all the time, so I don't think your body gets the time to really detox and start the hangover period , hangovers are mostly down to be pen dihidrated also , so the hot wether and constant drinking while on holiday possibly helps this .

Or the larger you drink on holiday is actually just camels **** , wouldn't surprise me those crafty foreigners

On holiday you are probably drinking a bit more but its over a longer period of time and you have additional time for recovery. At home you probably drink quicker than your liver can process and you don't allow as much recovery time.

Its also possible that if you continuously drink on holiday the amount of alcohol in your system will have an anasthetic effect (while still damaging your liver).

The adrenaline you experience in anticipation of a good night out might also aid recovery.

I'm probably way off the mark, but I've always been convinced that the beer you drink abroad, be it in Spain, Greece or even in America, has less of a 'chemical' base to it than the stuff we get smashed on here.

As others have mentioned, the hair of the dog mentality usually kicks in the next night, plus the fact that you have basically become immune after a weeks solid boozing helps. I also think that the generally great weather, untold numbers of fry ups in dodgy Ex-Pat English eateries (to give you back a stomach lining) & the knowledge that there's no work to have to get up for, doesn't half make more drinking that bit easier!

How much would you drink to get a hangover, in terms of units?

    Its different for everyone.

most people find out through trial and error testing.

    Too many variables.

Size, weight, sex, age, metabolism, liver function, blood sugar etc etc.

Even the same person can differ from weekend to weekend, I find. Could be other factors like what they've eaten, how much sleep they've had etc.

Well last night for example, I'd say I had about....8-10 bottles of bud, and one Kopparburg. However, I'd been the pub for the game as well and I had 2 pints there and a Kopparburg.

What about between drinks? If a person went through a 350ml bottle of vodka one day, and the same amount of same strength whisky another day, would one leave more of a hangover than the other?

I think that differs from person to person too. But I have heard people say that coloured spirits (whiskey, dark rum) give hangovers but clear spirits (vodka, gin) don't. Can't verify that myself though.

Science "proves" that the darker drinks cause worse hangovers, but I've had some awful hangovers after vodka, gin, Bacardi etc. and have sometimes been fresh as a daisy the day after a feed of whiskey, dark rum etc.

I think there are far too many variables to predict the severity of a hangover. I've woken up the day after 5 pints with a sore head, and I've gotten up fresh as a daisy after an all-day session where I've had perhaps 15 pints and 10 whiskeys. Of course, it'll usually be the opposite way around, but it can be very, very hard to second-guess your body.

Nope. Vodka gives me massive hangovers. I have stopped drinking it because of that fact.

Every liquor has the ability to give you a hangover. It's about volume ingested, and how much water you. You get a hangover because your body is dehydrated, and mad at you.

The only way to not get a hangover is don't start drinking, or don't stop.

The second option is my preferred choice.

That brings me on to my next query

I know that not everyone gets hangovers, but is that down to age or metabolism or something else entirely?

My girlfriend doesn't get them at all. Some benefit of her diabetes. I think alcohol increases the amount of insulin your body produces, lowering your blood sugar (obviously diabetics don't produce insulin at all). I think that's why a lot of people swear by Lucozade as a cure although I can't stand the stuff.

I'm wishing today that I had stopped. Hurting pretty good. Told everyone in the office that I took allergy pills and they wrecked my head.

Couldn't have been that 9.30 am to 10.30 pm drinking though.....

I don't get them either, Im thinking it could have something to do with metabolism. I don't think Lucozade would actually help any more than the other 'cures' people believe in.

I put it down to sunshine and excitement. When i go down town i know that when i wake up im going to feel rough and not want to drink for a while. When i'm on holiday the only thing i care about in the morning is going to get a fried breakfast and find a sun bed next to the pool. You don't lounge around watching tele on holiday which takes your mind off it, all you want to do is have a good time.

Probably not. But I just went out and bought a 6-pack anyway. Gonna test it out sometime soon. I normally swear by a Resolve sachet (or 3).

I've only ever had a hangover after Vodka. I've been really sick/black out level of drunkness about eight times and all of them were Vodka induced (can't stand the stuff now). I can down 10 shots of anything else and be fresh and energetic the next morning. But 6 shots of Vodka and I'm beat.

A ham sandwich & couple of pints of squash with 2 paracetamol works for me. Lord knows why I went the ham route, but it's my tried & tested and the easiest to do when you're back home & smashed.

I can drink vodka, gin & most lagers without any problem the next day, but Budweiser leaves me nursing a terror head. I've also heard the story that Whiskey and darker spirits leave you feeling worse, so I tend to steer clear unless it's called upon.

What age are you? Cause generally i find younger people don't get half as bad hangovers. Remember when i was 16-19 i'd be grand getting up the day after even with little sleep. Now pretty much dying for a day. Also suppose you drink less at that age as well.

I am definitely young, I hope thats not the reason for no hangovers though, I don't ever want them. But I doubt I will drink more than I do now in ten years. I don't think I could.
