There are plenty of great actresses. They're just less noticed by audiences for some reason.

Seriously though, I'm crap at these kind of things. I like Anthony Hopkins a lot, though.

Perfect example of an actor appreciated mainly because of the films he's been in. He is a great actor but his run of films are just amazing, as small his filmography has been.

Another example is poor John Cazale.

True, he has been in some great films, but he gets overlooked IMO, because normally he's not a lead actor but a supporting role.

He's also a fine comedy actor as well.

His acting in the first Rocky film was pretty good, and lets not forget he directed that.

It depends really about what you like in acting. Does a performance like Rocky compare to some of the stuff DAniel Day-Lewis made? They both did their job perfectly. The rest is the material really that dictates the greatness mostly.

When I prosed that question of why there's no female actors being mentioned, the reason being they're never given big epic roles in film, with an example of the don of a family (Corleone) being male! A male dominated past have probably just transcended on to film without particular intention.

Probably, but most epic movies centre around bygone era's where the lead characters are usually men. It's something social I guess. Still there is plenty of big movies with females at the centre, Avatar being the most recent. Films like Out Of Africa, The Piano, Howards End, Kill Bill(s), The Color Purple, Titanic and of course the Gone With The Wind off the top of my head. It's the story really that dictates it. The Hunger Games now has a great female lead. As I said, it's the story.

Anyway, I didn't consider actresses because I thought this thread was for male actors only.

Three pages in and no Anthony Hopkins or John Hurt either.

Richard Harris is also a brilliant actor.

Not in any particular order as i don't think you can have the best etc as it's rather subjective.

Brando, Bridges, Clooney, Pacino, Penn, Robinson, Murrey and i would also include Min-sik Choi there are countless more though.
