Footballer Joey Barton has been punched in the face outside a nightclub in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police said officers were called to Eberle Street at about 05:30 BST following reports of a disturbance outside the Garlands club.

His club Queens Park Rangers said two men sang offensive chants at the midfielder and then hit him.

Two 21-year-olds are being held on suspicion of a public order offence and are currently in police custody.

A spokesman for QPR said: "Joey Barton was involved in an incident in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Monday morning.

"Barton was on his way home from a night out with his girlfriend when two men sang offensive chants and then proceeded to hit the Rs midfielder."

"Police were immediately on the scene and... Barton decided not to press charges and left the scene with his girlfriend soon after."

Barton, 29, was banned for 12 matches after being sent off in Queens Park Rangers' defeat at Manchester City on the final day of the season.

The Football Association found him guilty of two counts of violent conduct.

He joined QPR in August last year on a free transfer from Newcastle and became club captain

Joey Barton in fight shock! Who'd have thought it!

We have no idea what went on but Barton must be stupid to go out to a club in Liverpool these days. After all the trouble with his family, the arrest for fighting in the town centre and with his profile!

The last time Barton was involved in a fight, he was with several people beating up one guy...so I won't be shedding any tears over him getting a bit of payback.

Joey Barton has been assaulted in the street. Police have narrowed down the list of 'people with a motive' to everybody!

Its not him I was concerned about.

Once you've put a cigarette out in somebody's eye, you deserve what you get. A punch in the gob is a tiny piece of karma.

What a ****. (Joey Barton, not you Loc!)

For a while I actually thought JB had turned it around for himself but the Man City incident proved he hasn't.

yeah it's really his fault he caN'T GO OUT WITH HIS MISSUS WITHOUT HAVING SOME DRUNKS WANTING TO FIGHT HIM. fair enough he's got his history and maybe deserves little respect. but it's not always down to him

Get a reputation as a "tough guy" and people will want to challenge you...simple solution would have been for Barton to conduct himself like many other people in life and not act the hardman/thug...as you reap and all that.

Euro 2012: Joey Barton - 'I'd walk into England squad'

Joey Barton believes he would have featured in the England squad at Euro 2012 were it not for his behavioural problems on and off the pitch.

He will serve a 12-match ban next season for kicking Sergio Aguero and clashing with Vincent Kompany after he was sent off at Manchester City.

Barton, who won one England cap in 2007, wrote on Twitter: "Why are people saying [I] 'can't get in squad etc'?

"On ability I walk into the squad, on behaviour I don't."

Barton, who began his career at Manchester City and spent four years with Newcastle, was in the news again last week when he was arrested, and later bailed, following a brawl outside a nightclub in his native Liverpool.

On the pitch, Barton was also sent-off against Norwich last season, while he picked up 10 bookings.

The QPR midfielder, who won his only cap under Steve McClaren in a 1-0 defeat against Spain, was critical of England coach Roy Hodgson's decision to draft in Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson following the injury to Frank Lampard.

Henderson is joined in the England squad by fellow Liverpool players Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll and Martin Kelly, despite the Reds suffering a difficult season which saw them finish eighth in the Premier League.

They did win the Carling Cup and reached the final of the FA Cup, but that was not enough to prevent manager Kenny Dalglish from losing his job.

"If Henderson got in, any Englishman not currently in the squad has to feel aggrieved. Yes, I wish I was there but I'm not," he said.

"Everyone's thinking it, I'll say it. Liverpool have [had] an horrific season and have six players in our Euro squad. What chance do we have? [The England manager should] Pick on form.

"How [Grant] Holt, [Micah] Richards, [Michael] Carrick, [Rio] Ferdinand, [Leon] Osman, [Daniel] Sturridge etc never got involved is a travesty."

Barton insists he still wants England to do well at Euro 2012, but he is convinced they are unlikely to win the tournament.

"I really hope England do well and win it, I really do. All am saying is I don't think we will," he tweeted.

"If everyone stays fit, we've got a decent 11 once [Wayne] Rooney's back.

"If any of the key players get a knock, we are done for. Three games in eight or nine days takes its toll on the body. If a few are carrying injuries from a long domestic season, it will show. Not being pessimistic, just a realist.

"I am overqualified to pass judgement on this. Not only have I played in the Premier League for 10 years but I've played with and against most of them."
Sometimes he really doesn't help himself. His comments on Jordan Henderson are nothing short of disrespectful. He talks about how poor a season we had but neglects to accept that QPR nearly got relegated...
