He was set to join Spurs, but will Redknapp leaving change anything ?

The fee was around £9m. We'd be mad not to at least inquire

    He'll want first team football.
Skrtel and Agger are our first choice.
Kelly and Coates will hopefully be there cover.
Wisdom is our academy prospect getting first team football.
I think Carragher will get his badges and become a coach next season.

He's a wonderful player and he can also play as a defensive midfielder.

He would be able to provide cover for Lucas while he is nursed back to full fitness. I'd also play him ahead of Carragher and Coates at the moment - and we all know that Agger will get an injury during some time of the season.

£9m is a bargain if you ask me.

Not saying he's not a good player but with Skrtel Agger Coates Kelly and Carra as back up, Do we really need another CB?

This guy can easily play all along the back line and is just as good in dm, we need people of this quality and for 9m, would get rid of te deadwood at this club and raise more cash to buy quality players like this!

I've watched quite a few Ajax matches & I totally agree - this guy is quality. And for that price, he'd be a steal considering how versatile he is - CB, DM, LB, is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and he gets forward well. He's easily better than Kelly & Coates and he would get regular playing time either rotating with Agger & Skrtel, or starting as a second DM with or as cover for Lucas.

If he can cover LB and DM as well then we should try and get him I think. Last season showed we need cover for these positions and would be good to have a player that can keep the competition up for Agger and Skrtel as well.

True. Remember Kompany, he played for a while as DM for Belgium. As they used to have Van Buyten.

I think Kelly will become a CB in years to come, but within the next year or two ? No

Realistically he won't be tried out there in a competitive match unless we're short of options

Buying Vertonghen could potentially save us buying a LB and DM too as cover for Enrique and Lucas. Skrtel is currently probably our only reliable CB. Agger is still slightly injury prone, I can't see Carragher involved much if we want to play posession football and Coates hasn't had much PL experience

Vertonghen worths every penny of the 9M but it will depends on our transfer kitty because a CB or even a LB is not our top three priority.
