Despite being on international duty, Steven Gerrard was given permission by England manager Fabio Capello to make a brief appearance in this match. Gerrard started but was replaced by Danny Murphy after ten minutes.

Bizarrely Jamie Carragher scored for both teams in his own testimonial match. Having scored a penalty for Liverpool just before half-time, he then gave one away shortly after Joe Cole had increased Liverpool's lead to 3-0. With Everton player Yakubu about to take the responsibility, Carragher strode into the penalty-area and drilled the ball past Brad Jones' left hand and then trotted to the touchline to be immediately substituted. Referee Mark Halsey pointed to the centre-circle, thereby awarding the goal. Technically an own-goal it could be argued but not one that will go down in the record-books.

    Charlton Athletic Goal

    Les Boulter 3'

    - Playing bright, attractive football, Charlton took the lead after just three minutes; Hobbis' left-wing cross is missed by Stan Prior but Les Boulter is on hand to beat Hobson with a powerful rising shot. After this Charlton dominate the proceedings. Joe Jobling's fierce free-kick is just wide and Prior almost deceives Hobson with a swerving long-range effort. The Charlton players march off at half-time with appreciative applause ringing in their ears. After the interval, though, they find Liverpool an entirely different proposition. Wingmen Nieuwenhuys and Hanson are menacing and Fred Howe produces a number of telling passes. It is centre-forward Howe who sets up a deserved equaliser after sustained pressure. His pass wrong-foots the defence and finds Hanson whose acute drive beats a startled Bartram. Charlton are now flagging noticeably and the departure of John Oakes, with a nasty eye injury, reduces them to ten men. Bartram makes a string of fine saves but Charlton almost sneak the win in a late rally which sees a Hobb's shot hit the bar and Hobson under pressure from a succession of corners.
