The World Shield was spawned from the Ranfurly Shield created in this forum. It came into existence in February 2012 when for the first time the Ranfurly Shield holders lost a competitive game to a team from outside the EPL, with Man U losing at OT to Ajax.

That spawned the "World shield" with the same rules as the Ranfurly Shield but without the EPL restriction. It might be an interesting road, the shield will move across countries and outside of the top divisions occasionally, as a result of cup upsets. Super Cup and World Club championship games will count so it could eventually move from Europe to South America.

I won't bother with the previews and score reports etc, will just give an occasional update about the whereabouts of the World Shield every now and then or if something interesting happens...

Ranfurly Shield continues unabated - link is here:

Ajax went on a mammoth run as inaugural World Shield holders, (reminiscent of Newcastles inaugural Ranfurly Shield tenure) making seventeen successful defences in all, firstly in the latter part of the 11/12 season, going from around fourth in Eredivisie to comfortably securing the title. They made some defences in the new season before losing 1-0 at Dortmund, who after taking the Shield to Germany then promptly lost at Hamburg in their first outing.

Hamburg retained with a 2-2 draw at our favourite cousins Monchengladbach and next are at home to Hanover.

Interestingly all three holders of the Shield to date are former European Cup winners.

Stuttgart retain the Shield. Ibisevic scored again

A bit sad myself, I feel a nostalgic connection with Eintracht. Never liked them much at the the time back in the eighties, but they've been strangely absent for so long it's nice to see them back.

    Anyway, well in Stuttgart.

Next up is a home defence against St Pauli, another nostalgic club, 2nd home of the Beatles...

An impressive retention of the Shield by Stuttgart, in front of a hostile 80,000 crowd anad against a class team and club.

Next up are Copenhagen away, and not far on the horizon lies a trip to Romania, so their could be interesting detours ahead...

    VFB STUTTGART 2 Hannover 96 4

The run of the Stuttgarters had to come to an end. 2-0 up at home, they couldn't hold off a fast finishing Hanover team in a game with three penalties.
First up will be Freiburg, with Bayern lying in wait if they Hanover can hold onto it for a couple of weeks...

First up for Die Roten is a home defence against Freiburg. Not too tough in theory, although Freiburg are doing OK in mid-table, only 4 points and 5 places behind Hannover.

A quick history tour for Hannover, twice German champions but both times pre-Bundesliga days, maybe their biggest claim is as the only team outside the Bundesliga to win the German cup.

    Money on '96

In progress, Freiburg lead 2-1 after 70. If they hold on Stuttgart get a chance to win the Shield back

David v Goliath this one, there was always the feeling that when the Shield went to Germany it would end up in Bayern's hands. That would also give a decent chance of the Shield moving borders given that Bayern are still in the CL and don't lose that many games in Germany.

But don't write off Freiburg too early, 6th in the table, playing at home and a great win over local rivals Stuttgart last time out.

Next up if Freiburg can hold on are:
    -Augsburg (a)
    -Greuther Furth (h)

If Bayern do get up, they'll face:
    -Dortmund (h)
    -BATE Borisov (Belarus) (h)

A few facts about Freiburg seeing they managed to defend the Shield:
    -Colours - red

-Their Manager is the highly rated and increasing sought after Christian Streich, who took over last season with them bottom of the Bundesliga and took them to a twelfth placed finish, with more progress again this saeson
-Since the '90s they have been known as the Brasilianers due to their exciting style of play
-They've spent much of their time outside the top flight, returning to the Bundesliga most recently in 2009
-They have never won a major honour (and now are World Shield holders)
-Famous old boys include (the not so old) Pa****e Cisse, Joachim Low, and Alain Sutter
    -Famous Managers, mmm not really

-In truth I can't find a bunch about their current players, anyone know anything?
