Best Defence? What's LFC's best defensive lineup and why?

The manager rang the changes at the weekend as Jamie Carragher was brought into the starting line-up alongside Agger, Wisdom and Johnson to help to marshal the defence. With Brad Jones filling in for Pepe Reina and injury stopping Jose Enrique from building on a good start to the season the new look line-up earned a clean sheet with some impressive performances adding to the managers options.

If you were Brendan Rodgers and all players were fit what would be your favoured defensive line-up and why? Would you stay with the established players or bring Sebastian Coates into the starting line-up? Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson have both featured at full back, would you try this again? What about the formation, it it always a back four or would you try 3 at the back with a pair of attacking wing-backs?

All on form and fully fit, that is without a doubt our best defence. Though on current form Carra should be playing instead of Skrtel.

Wisdom has done a good job at RB but I would prefer Enrique at LB and Johnson at RB.

For me there's only one place up for grabs, and that's between Enrique, Wisdom and Kelly. The position should really be Enrique's to lose as he is a senior player and gives us the best balance, but he's been affected by form and injuries.

Otherwise it's Johnson, Skrtel and Agger all day long assuming fit and on form.

Carragher brings leadership, communication and organization within the match to the side.. I would keep him ahead of Skrtel for that reason.

i like the idea of 3 at back with 2 wing backs with lucas sg and hendo in midfield luis and danno up front especially againsy one of the top sides away from home would have been a good choice at o/t but lets try in at emirates and against city ynwa

Johnson & Enrique are the first choice fullbacks and that goes without saying. As for a central pairing that's actually a tough one as I'm of the opinion that we lack organisation when Skrtel & Agger play together. Carra is a great leader and a settling presence at the back but at 34 he isn't getting any younger so I feel that we need another centre half who can come in and organise things at the back.

Don't get me wrong I feel that Agger and Skrtel are great centre backs but neither has that vocal presence that we genuinely need. Sebastian Coates has vast potential, but again, his limited English and inexperience work against him when it comes to organising the back four. Personally I would alternate Carragher and Skrtel depending on our opposition (Much like the gaffer did on Saturday) until we can bring in another body.

So essentially:

Johnson Carragher/Skrtel Agger Enrique

We have some great young talent coming through that can cover the fullback positions like Andre, Kells, Robbo and even young Jack Smith & Ryan McLaughlin are showing massive potential. The central area is a slight worry however.

Not sure about Skrtel and Enrique. Wisdom in my opinion could be the man. The person to give Wisdom wisdom is Carra. Johnson is the man and great on the left, he
has had some of his best games, the shot is on his right foot and he is loving it. Agger is the man.

I would have to go with Johnson on the left as the only other real option would be Enrique and based on his performances in midfield I think he would be much better pushed forward. Kelly for me is a consistent performer with a decent cross and the ability to go forward, as well as being a better defender than Johnson. Wisdom wouldn't be far behind with his solid performances this season and at such a young age. Skrtel and Agger all the way, love Carra but he's not got the pace anymore and you can be easily punished in the premier league. Left back and a Centre back are needed before the start of next season.

As things stand and if all fully fit and ready to go - this is it for me. But I echo some of the concerns over needing better cover in the Centre. Wisdom is having a good run, but has been found out at times, and I've always been a fan of Kelly. He (Kelly) is a potential for the future for that CB role IMO.

Oh, and of course - Lucas in front of this lot!

With Johnson and Enrique being "attacking backs". I think the addition of Lucas (the perfect DM) will be better to assist Skrtel and Agger

Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique with Lucas sitting. When attacking the fullback go forward with the 2 CB's opening up to cover as much ground as possible and Lucas sitting just in front of them for cover in the middle. When we get hit on the counter though the flanks, Skrtel / Agger go after that player, with Lucas going to CB for cover. That way we won't be that open as we are at times. Also in the big away games, when one Fullback goes up, the other stays to give more cover when we lose the ball.
