LUIS SUAREZ is the best player ever to have worn the red shirt of Liverpool, according to Anfield old boy Craig Johnson.

“I know it will cause a bit of a scene but it is my opinion,” said the retired midfielder, a stalwart of the all-conquering Liverpool team of the Eighties.

Johnson also branded Chelsea flop Fernando Torres as “the incredible sulk” after the striker’s move from Anfield backfired.

If you think you can be in total control of anything with Luis Suarez around, I think you are deluded.

As we have seen in the past, having a player under contract does not put you in total control. Just ask Everton about Joleon Lescott. Or Liverpool about Javier Mascherano. Or Fernando Torres.

Yes, having a player under contract puts you in a good bargaining position, but as we have seen in the past, players who really want to force a move find a way to get the message across. We have seen other players do it when rich and ambitious clubs came calling, and since I don't have a particularly high opinion of Luis Suarez' character, I would not put it past him to do the same.

No doubt he is a great player but best ever? He would have to overshadow Liddell, Dalglisg, gerard and a host of others. Not sure he meets tha criteria

    Valid opinion.

Achievement alone, no. Longevity, no. Class, no.

    Passion? Right up there.
Skill, ability, game changing deadliness? One of, if not the best.

No one in his right mind would compare him to those players imo. After all we're talking about a player who would never play a full season for us because he just can't ****** control himself. At best he's useful for about 2 thirds of a season.

Comparing Kenny to a guy that can't ever be trusted to actually be available says it all.

For those of us who have lived for a while, there will probably never be anyone like Kenny playing for us. And that's not because of me sharing a first name with him

Best how? A brilliant player no doubt but every amazing thing he does is accompanied by five infuriating things.

    Goodnight!

Like I said it depends upon the criteria of "best".

If you're talking about the passion and intensity on the field, the will to win and pure tricky unpredictable sick Messi-esque skills... then it's a very valid opinion.

If you're talking about temperament, all round game, longevity, loyalty, achievements at the club, sure he can't be included in the conversation.

So it just depends upon the criteria by which you use to judge "best". If by "best" Craig means "most skillful" or "best ball skills" or "best dribbler" or "most intense", then he certainly has a valid point

He doesn't make my top 5 at the moment, but I think you'll see him inside the top 10 or at worst 20 of Players Who Shook The Kop, and that alone will show that Craig isn't a complete lunatic to say that

Might be the most talented but he hasn't yet reached the heights of Kenny or Gerrard or Rush at their respective peaks.

^This, exactly this. Prob what Johnstone meant, and hard to argue against imo. Suarez might well be a loose canon and a bit of a fool, but in terms of pure talent he is utterly incredible.

I would say John Barnes was a better player. Put Barnes at his peak into last seasons team and we finish in the top 4.

Yeah I can just see it now...

Real Madrid: We will give you £40m for Suarez

Ian Ayre: £40m? Are you crazy? Craig Johnston just said he's Liverpool's best ever player.

Real Madrid: Damn. Ok we'll give you £50m then.

Ian Ayre: Oh... and David Burrows said he thought Luis was quite a decent player too.

Real Madrid: Fine. £55m then. But stop getting your past players to comment on him. It's not fair.

By the way, someone should tell the Express that his name is Johnston, not Johnson. Shocking journalism if you can't even get the name of the main person in your article correct.

It's a fair call...he's not talking about the most iconic or most devoted servant. He's talking about talent and raw skill, which Suarez and Barnes would surely be the stand out names on that list.

    This.

Still believe Barnes from 87-90 was the best a LFC player has ever performed. In terms of Quality, Skill etc Barnes is the best but Suarez could very well be secound.

But i agree you have to have Success, Longitivity among other things to go along with those qualitys therefore hes miles off Dalglish and Gerrard

I mentioned this a few days ago on here that my grandad whose seen them all from billy Liddell said he's possibly one of the best he's ever seen

Made me really think tbh, because I know he's superb but would never have classed him with Liddell an dalglish.

Remember that post. No doubt the guy has immense talent , one of the best I've seen here and been a follower since Kenny's days . But best ever ? Stick by my top 10 , maybe pushing top 5 . If your granddad saw Liddel in the flesh then he's a lucky guy and someone who's opinion matters.
