Give us some lyrics you find inspirational, deep, funny, poetic or just absolute pure genius

Keep it to one or two lines please ladies and gentlemen.

Going to kick it off with a line from Arcade fire, Neighborhood #2. It's a simple line but oh so true.

If you want something don't ask for nothing, if you want nothing don't ask for something

    Have at it .......................

    In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?
Heaven knows I'm miserable now - the Smiths

Richard Hawley - Tonight The Streets Are Ours

Don't let fear of feeling fool you
What you see sets you apart
And there's nothing here to bind you,
It's no way for life to start

    But do you know that
Tonight - the streets are ours
Tonight - the streets are ours
And these lights in our hearts they tell no lies

Those people, they got nothing in their souls
And they make our TVs blind us
From our vision and our goals
Oh the trigger of time it tricks you
So you have no way to grow

    But do you know that
Tonight - the streets are ours
Tonight - the streets are ours
These lights in our hearts, they tell no lies

And no one else can haunt me
The way that you can haunt me
I need to know you want me
    I couldn't be without you
And the light that shines around you
No, nothing ever mattered more than not doubting
But tonight the streets are ours

Do you know how to kill loneliness at last
Oh there's so much there to heal dear
And make tears things of the past

    But do you know that
Tonight - the streets are ours
Tonight - the streets are ours
These lights in our street are ours
Tonight - the streets are ours
And these lights in our hearts they tell no lies

Awesome. It's always Leonard for the best lyrics. I'll go for maybe the one that sums him up most - from I'm Your Man.

"Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
    "

I have to mention The National though... and Hard to Find

"I don't know why we had to lose
The ones who took so little space
They're still waiting for the years
To cover what we can't erase

I'm not holding out for you
I'm still watching for the signs
If I tried you'd probably be
    Hard to find
    "

very powerful and yet simple, beautiful american literature in fact

I dreamed just last night you were there by my side
Your sweet loving tenderness easing my pride
But then I awoke, dear, and found you not there
It was just my old memory of how much I care

This is about those people; who turn themselves into smaller groups of people, to make themselves feel stronger by excluding others.

Bruce Hornsby's The Way It Is...

    tanding in line, marking time
    Waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old lady's eyes
Just for fun he says, "Get a job."

Death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away,
I'm living life, do or die, what can I say
I'm 23 now but will I live to see 24
The way things are going I don't know.

It's a bitter sweet symphony, that's life. Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die.

Oasis - Let there be love

    Come on, baby blue
    Shake up your tired eyes
The world is waiting for you
May all your dreaming fill the empty sky

But if it makes you happy
    Keep on clapping
Just remember I'll be by your side
And if you don't let go, it's gonna pass you by

some times you get too close to see
a different side of what life could be
and if you stare too long it all becomes a blur
and its easy to forget just who we are
don't stare to hard, just take a look around...

Band I like called Strung Out, from the song Too Close to See.

Only went with your mother 'cos she's dirty
And I don't have a decent bone in me

The red car and the blue car had a race
All that red could do was stuff his face
    He eats everything he sees
    From trucks to prickly trees
But smart old blue, he took the Milky Way

    The subtext of this song
I've thought about it for so long
But it's really not the sort of thing
That people want to hear us sing

    The context of this song
Well I could go on and on
    But it's still unfashionable
    To believe in principles

South South Yorkshire - mass murderer
How can you sleep at night, sleep at night

South South Yorkshire - mass murderer
How can you sleep at night, sleep at night

    The reason for this song
Well maybe it's a pointless one
    But thank you Jimmy McGovern
For reminding me of what lives on

    The ending for this song
Well I haven't really thought of one
There's nothing I could ever say
That could really take the pain away

Time flies by when youíre a driver of a train
Speeding out of Trumpton with a cargo of cocaine
I get high when Iím the pilot of a plane
Touching down in Camberwick Iím stoned out of my brain

    You line them up
    Look at your shoes
You hang names on your wall
    Then you shoot them all

    You fly around in planes
    That bring you down
To meet me who loves you, like
    Me crashing to the ground

    Are you so lonely?
    Don't even know me
But you'd like to stone me

Mr Writer, why don't you tell it like it is?
Why don't you tell it like it really is?
    Before you go on home

I used to treat you right
    Give you my time
But when I'd turn my back on you
Then you do what you do

You've just enough, in my own view
    Education to perform
I'd like to shoot you all
    And then you go home
    With you on your own
    What do you really know?

Mr Writer, why don't you tell it like it is?
Why don't you tell it like it really is?
    Before you go on home

    And then you go home
    With you on your own
    What do you even know?

Mr Writer, why don't you tell it like it is?
Why don't you tell it like it really is?
    Before you go on home

Mr Writer, why don't you tell it like it is?
Why don't you tell it like it always is?
    Before you go on home

Mr Writer, why don't you tell it like it really is?
Why don't you tell it like it always is?
    Before you go on home

Porter by Scroobius Pip v Dan le Sac. Lyrically, I think the man's among the best around at the moment. Thoughtful, insightful, challenging. And Dan lays down sum phat beats tho, innit.

Cell four'll be Dorothy sweet little thing
Always likes to chat and smile and dance and sing
It's startling when you start to think
Of how you might react to this darker thing

She believes that she travelled to a far away land
And havoc was wreaked by her own fair hand
She killed a woman by mistake, straight away on arriving
Then formed a gang to go and hunt and kill the victim's sibling
It's kind of ********** up they killed wolves and crows
As they trod a bloodstained path along a yellow brick road
And once they'd killed their second victim they still weren't done
This posse bounded on and hounded some old man for fun
She tells her story with a smile while not the slightest flicker of rigour lingers
As this princess clicks the heels on her slippers
Kinda hear a solemn mumble as I close the cell door
"Mr Porter we ain't in Kansas no more"
