Half of unidentified Hillsborough witnesses have come forward after appeal

    11:17, 24 April 2015
    By Carrie Evans

Police investigating the tragedy need to find nine more survivors

Half of the unidentified survivors of the Hillsborough disaster being sought by police have come forward within 24 hours of appeal being launched.

With nine witnesses now found it means only nine are left unidentified – all of which are believed to have helped some of the 96 victims.

The images – taken from CCTV footage filmed on the day – show acts of bravery including a group of men carrying a victim using an advertising hoarding as a makeshift stretcher.

Detectives from Operation Resolve, the police inquiry into the events of April 15, 1989, believe 15 fans, two policemen and a match steward are pictured in the images.

Assistant Commissioner Jon Stoddart, the Operation Resolve commander, said: “This is potentially the last opportunity to identify these witnesses and assist the families to know as much as they can about their loved ones.

“We believe these people could have valuable information to help answer the families’ questions. We have done everything possible to identify these people through other means. We are now turning to the public to ask them to help.

“I know these pictures are 26 years old, but if anyone does recognise the people we need to speak to then I would urge them to get in touch immediately.”

Police need to speak to these people now because the fresh inquests into the 96 deaths, currently ongoing in Warrington, will soon move to a new phase that examines the movements of each victim on the day of the tragedy.

Anyone who can identify any of the people in the images is asked to call Operation Resolve on 08000 283 284 or visit the Operation Resolve website here

It's great news that half of those came forward so quickly.

Hopefully the others will soon. (Or God forbid if they've since passed away, a relative is able to identify them)

    Update on latest Hillsborough appeal

    30th Apr 2015 - Latest News

Four people have come forward since further images of potential Hillsborough disaster witnesses were released by Operation Resolve on behalf of the coroner on Wednesday.

20 people are now still sought in relation to this latest appeal.

The pictures released by Operation Resolve are of people who assisted some of those who tragically lost their lives on April 15, 1989.

Although the images are 26 years old, it is hoped that the public will recognise these people and will contact investigators to identify them.

The public are asked to visit www.operationresolve.co.uk to view the gallery of pictures and they can also call Operation Resolve on 08000 283 284, if they can identify an image.

Last week a nationwide appeal was launched and the identity of 18 people was sought. So far, 11 of those people have been identified.

The officer in overall command of Operation Resolve, assistant commissioner Jon Stoddart, said: "The response to our appeal has been phenomenal and I am extremely grateful to the public for their support, especially those who have made contact with us to identify themselves, a relative or friend.

"We would urge the public to look at the latest images that we have released because I think they may be able to identify them, too. It is important that we track these potential witnesses down as they could help answer some of the many questions that the families of the 96 still have.

"As I have said previously, what we are doing is unusual and I cannot reiterate the importance of people heeding the warnings and advice issued by the coroner and the office of the Attorney General.

"It is important that people do not pass comment on our appeal or any other aspect of the Hillsborough disaster on social media and forums."

To view the gallery of pictures, click here. You can also call Operation Resolve on 08000 283 284, if you can identify an image.

Police investigating the tragedy still need to find more survivors

More survivors of the Hillsborough disaster being sought by police have come forward following a fresh appeal this week.

Pictures were released by Operation Resolve of people who went to the aid of casualties, including those who lost their lives, on April 15, 1989.

This week’s appeal saw 19 images released showing 24 people who detectives need to talk to.

Four of these 24 people have now come forward, meaning 20 people are still sought in relation to this latest appeal.

The most recent appeal has also prompted potential witnesses from previous appeals to come forward this week.

There are still witnesses detectives want to speak to though and a further image has now been released by Operation Resolve.

Hillsborough inquests to begin hearing how each individual died in the disaster

    11:14, 5 May 2015
    By Amy Browne

The jury in Warrington have been told they will hear harrowing evidence as the inquests endeavour to tell 96 individual stories

The Hillsborough inquests will next week enter a new phase, which will tell the stories of each of the 96 people who died in the disaster.

At today’s hearing, the jury were told that the gathering of this evidence has been “painstaking” and some of what they will hear will be difficult and sometimes “harrowing”.

Christina Lambert, counsel to the inquests, said the new section will include evidence concerning the movements of each of the victim and witnesses will give accounts of what they saw and heard. Video footage will also be shown.

She said: "We hope, insofar as we possibly can, to elicit all of that evidence in a logical way, so that we tell the story of each of those who died."

Ms Lambert said the work of Operation Resolve - the criminal investigation into the deaths of the 96 - has been "extraordinary" and the family teams have been very helpful.

“The effect of all of this work, is that we will endeavour to tell 96 individual stories,” she said.

But Ms Lambert said it won’t be possible to tell the full story of every single victim.

"For some, unfortunately, there is precious little evidence,” she added.

At today’s hearing, the jury heard from Dr Jasmeet Soar, a consultant at a hospital in Bristol and Dr Jerry Nolan, a consultant at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. Both specialise in the provision of care for critically ill patients in intensive care units, and were asked to consider in particular, whether any of those who died at Hillsborough could have survived if things had been different.

Dr Soar said: "From the witness evidence and the forensic evidence and the information we have reviewed, and in particular the witness evidence where it hopefully will get some descriptions of the condition of individuals and what care they had, there will be some individuals where we will be able to provide an opinion on the likely timing of death."

He confirmed they will consider whether any of the victims might have survived if the medical emergency in the pens had been recognised earlier, or if the organisation to the emergency had been different.

Dr Soar said each individual case will be reviewed based on facts, and forensic evidence will play a key part. He said they will be able to provide an opinion and give evidence concerning survival and potential treatments that might help.

But neither of the consultants have been asked to give evidence on what might reasonably have been expected of the emergency responders, because that is being dealt with by other experts.

Yet an other appeal for another seven witnesses......

APPEAL: Police investigating Hillsborough disaster need help tracing seven more witnesses

    06:00, 28 May 2015
    By Joshua Taylor

Operation Resolve is assisting the inquests into the 96 deaths now taking place in Warrington

    1238 Shares

A photo taken on the day of the Hillsborough disaster showing seven witnesses Operation Resolve officers are trying to identify

This image shows seven more Hillsborough disaster witnesses police want to interview as part of their investigation into the tragedy.

The picture, released by the Operation Resolve inquiry team, shows a police officer and seven civilians. The men appear to be carrying a board.

This image is the latest in a series of witness appeals made by detectives who are assisting the fresh inquests into the 96 deaths currently taking place in Warrington.

Not one of the seven men in this latest picture has even been identified, but they could know crucial information about how some of the 96 spent their final moments.

Operation Resolve officers began making public witness appeals last month when they released 16 images of 18 unknown Hillsborough witnesses. Only one of those initial 18 remains unidentified.

A further three public appeals in subsequent weeks led to the identification of another 22 witnesses, but a further 31 are still being sought. Today’s new picture of seven more unknown witnesses takes that total to 38.

The evidence of these people could be vital to the ongoing inquests in Warrington that recently entered their second phase, which looks at the movements of each of the 96 victims on that fateful day of April 15, 1989.

When the first witness appeal was launched last month, Operation Resolve commander Assistant Commissioner Jon Stoddart said: “This is potentially the last opportunity to identify these witnesses and assist the families to know as much as they can about their loved ones.

“We believe these people could have valuable information to help answer the families’ questions.

“We have done everything possible to identify these people through other means. We are now turning to the public to ask them to help.”

Hillsborough appeal for six more people who may be able to help new inquests

    06:00, 16 July 2015
    By Gary Stewart

Operation Resolve has so far identified 45 people who were at Hillsborough Disaster but never previously interviewed

Investigators have released images of six more people they wish to speak to about the Hillsborough tragedy.

The potential witnesses are thought to have helped some of the 96 Liverpool fans who died at the FA Cup semi-final on April 15 1989.

On behalf of Hillsborough inquests coroner Sir John Goldring, the images have been released by Operation Resolve, which was set up by Home Secretary Theresa May to investigate whether any individuals or organisations are criminally culpable for their part in the disaster.

Operation Resolve have released 83 images to the public in the hope of identifying 98 witnesses who were at Hillsborough on the day.

So far 45 people have been identified, but police are still trying to trace 53 people - view the full gallery below

    Good Evening......

Operation Resolve released earlier today a new 'Gate C' Appeal....

    Gate C Appeal

Operation Resolve are looking to establish whether any individual or organisation is criminally culpable for their role leading up to and on the day of the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on Saturday 15 April 1989. As part of the inquiry, images of five men they would like to speak to have been released. These men could have information that will assist investigators and could be potential witnesses.

Hillsborough investigators have released two videos in a bid to track down witnesses who helped on the day of the disaster.

The two clips have been released by Operation Resolve - the criminal investigation into the deaths of 96 Liverpool FC fans at the semi-final on April 15, 1989.

The clips (both of which you can watch in the footage above) are being used in appeals to identify people who carried casualties across the concourse behind the West Stand, through exit gate C and to waiting ambulances.

The first clip shows the four witnesses, marked A, B, C and D, carrying a casualty.

The second video shows witnesses, marked E, F, G, H and I, carrying another casualty across the same route.

Investigators call for witnesses in Leppings Lane concourse

Image of the Leppings Lane concourse at Hillsborough released by Operation Resolve. Investigators are seeking witnesses who helped - or saw others helping - a male in this area

Hillsborough investigators have issued a new appeal for witnesses who battled to help fans who died in the tragedy.

The Operation Resolve appeal is calling for people who were in the Leppings Lane concourse between 3pm and 4.15pm on April 15, 1989.

The enquiry team would like to speak to anyone who assisted - or saw others help - a male who appeared to be unconscious and was bare chested in the area.

Today’s appeal is the latest by Operation Resolve, which has so far released 105 images to the public as they continue to urge witnesses to contact the team.

Of 110 people the enquiry has sought to identify, 42 have so far been identified.

Witnesses are sought who may have seen and/or assisted the male at one or more of the following locations:

    - The concourse entrance to the tunnel under the West Stand (point A on the aerial photograph attached)

    - The concourse area (point B on the aerial photograph attached)

    - The service road by the River Don (point C on the aerial photograph attached)

Operation Resolve is the criminal investigation into the Hillsborough disaster and was formed following the publication of the 2012 Hillsborough Independent Panel report.
