Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso is reportedly set to retire at the end of the season.

Alonso spent five years at Anfield between 2004 and 2009, winning the Champions League and FA Cup in the process.

He is currently in his third year at Bayern Munich at the ripe old age of 35.

German publication Bild claim he is set to make a major announcement about his future.

And Alonso is expected to retire should Bayern wrap up a fifth straight Bundesliga title.

One of my favourite ever players to watch, always carried himself with class on and off the field. Wish him all the best in his future.

What a fantastic player Xabi was.

Over the last 15 years he was up there as one of my favourite Liverpool players.

His departure was the beginning of the end for Rafa and Liverpool became a pack of cards which has taken a while to recover.

Wish him all the best in his retirement.

Rafa strangely didn't seem to appreciate Alonso's importance to the team. I couldn't understand it at the time and still can't.

He should go to China for a year an earn some major cash before he calls it a day. Xabi's all class though so can't see it happening. Thanks for the memories!

Hope he comes back to work for us like Mr Garcia did. I know he has us in his heart so will be a welcome addition. Amazing passer of the ball, and great player. Went onto become even a better player when he left us. Just shows how much he could have done for us if he stayed.

His final year with us was his best ever season. Amazing performances from him that year.

We talk about replacing him in such a frivolous manner. You can't replace him. He's a world class player.

Watching him play was fascinating. Every choice of pass was purposeful, and his technique was incredible. He made 5 yard passes look like a thing of beauty. Probably my favourite player from my lifetime.

One of the best passers of a football I've ever seen. Feel so grateful to have seen him play at Anfield.

Top player and all round top bloke.

Read somewhere that was a key reason for him leaving Madrid was to work with Pep, to gain a wider knowlegde of football. He's worked under some top managers. I think he'll certainly go into it

I think he has the ingredients in terms of game intelligence lets see where it takes him. You maybe right his best mate Mikel Arteta is also working with Pep.

Imagine having him and Gerrard as coaches at LFC. Xabi has intelligence and dignity, as well as wonderful football experience and ability and would make an ideal coach. He will undoubtedly be a manager some day at a high level if he wants to be one. Meanwhile, he certainly could benefit LFC as a coach.

Eugh, this annoys me so much. Such selective memory.

    1) Rafa brought him from Sociedad and made him our main CM, even eventually at the extent of mr moveable' Stevie.
    2) In 07-08 Xabi has an average season by his standards. It wasn't that Rafa didn't appreciate him, it's that he was accepted as a sacrifice for Barry who had just had a fantastic season. Rafa wasn't one for sentiment, and the feeling at the time was Barry would have been a very good addition to the squad. The main (and justifiable) issue people had was we didn't want Alonso sold to fund Barry - but lets remember what owners we were dealing with then?
    3) After 08-09 Rafa desperately wanted him to stay. Why? Because he had a worldie of a season.

Rafa appreciated his importance fine. Just with money constraints believed it made sense to sacrifice him for Barry. Ideally he would've wanted an Alonso from 04-06, and a versatile, mobile midfielder in Barry, like the rest of us.

    In other news -

    Legendary player.

I wish him all the best too but Rafa tried to get rid following three seasons of mediocrity from Alonso. He was brilliant in his first and last seasons with us but that sandwiches the bits that most seem to forget. But on his day a real quality player.

Played for the most successful clubs in England, Spain & Germany. Not sure if there's anyone else in history that could say that.

    Myth peddled by Rafa apologists.

He had excellent seasons in his first & last, and had Good & Solid (but injury interrupted) seasons in-between that were still better than anything Barry had ever produced - this is why in the pre-season that Rafa was trying to peddle him off (to Juve), the supporters in all the pre-season games (in every location) were chanting his name to stay. That embarassed Rafa to re-think his "strategy", and that's why Xabi had every right to leave the next season when Real came along (even after Rafa was publicly trying to guilt-trip him to stay 'for the fans').

He's a really hard player to replace though. We've just seen a great generation of excellent mids coming to retirement age, Alonso, gerrard, lampard, Xavi, Pirlo, Iniesta off the top of my head. Those are the sort of players that don't grow on trees unfortunately.
