No saying that they lacked the genetics to compete with Slovenia, who were much stronger and taller. Article about it here http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/41553517

Argument loses it's merit when the smallest side in international football are Spain.

Haha, I wouldn't fancy Scotland's chances of beating Grumpy, Sleepy, Dopey etc even though there's only seven of em.

Probably better at defending corners than us too.

And the 2 best players in the history of the game are about 5' 7".

And not only Spain, Scotland have a taller team than Brazil and Argentina (and most South American sides actually). I'm sure he could find some big burly Scots to lose just as admirably if he wanted anyway. As far as excuses go this has got to be one of the worst I've ever heard.

Is it me or is Messi like getting better and looking better with age? His hat trick was insane!

Certainly was and he's been on fire this season (as usual), but before last night's game he'd only scored 4 in that group (in 9 games, which is hardly terrible, but by Messi standards it is quite low) and Argentina really made a meal of qualifying. The manager gambled on dropping Dybala and Icardi to get the best out of Messi and it definitely paid off. Ecuador are not a great side though and without him they might not have even won. They really ought to be much better with the players they have at their disposal. Brazil on the other hand absolutely stormed that group.

Carra tweeted regarding Mane injury 'The best of international football' sarcastically.

I get that it sucks, but then on the extreme other side, you get moments like Salah for Egypt. So honestly, what can you do?

Koppler had a thing for attractive chaps on the pitch… especially his darling Henderson.

Surely you recall the 'Koppler's World' thread?

bobby and phil (especially having played 87 mins ) should be suitably knackered for this weekends game after flying home last night I mean brazil qualified as group winners so why did phil need to play almost a full game is beyond me unless moaninho gave tite a call

I think 3 days of rest should do them fine.

Watched Iran 4 v 0 Germany U-17 on Eurosport. Allahyar Sayyad and Younes Delfi were brilliant. One a midfielder, one a striker.

Yeah, we'll see, Denmark or Switzerland I suppose would be the best. I’d say Italy will get the easiest 'draw', one way or another, so hopefully they don’t see us as the worst of the bunch!

Hahaha - is this what international football has become

Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph and Jordan Henderson have withdrawn from the England squad for the friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

They join Tottenham trio Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Harry Winks in pulling out of Gareth Southgate's selection.

That's some squad England have for these friendlies:

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke City), Joe Hart (West Ham - loan from Manchester City), Jordan Pickford (Everton).

Defenders: Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Michael Keane (Everton), Harry Maguire (Leicester), Danny Rose (Tottenham), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Eric Dier (Tottenham), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Jake Livermore (West Brom), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Crystal Palace - loan from Chelsea), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Forwards: Tammy Abraham (Swansea - loan from Chelsea), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Jamie Vardy (Leicester)

Some decent options at full back and CB options not too bad, but after that...?

We're gonna get bummed. In a bad way.
