My take is that we thought we would get Virgil right up to the last minute. Southampton really surprised many they held onto him.

Yep, especially as we paid a club record for a surplus Mid who would've also been free next summer. Should have spent that money on this or any other CB who could challenge Klavan/Lovren, then shift one of those two next summer when VVD arrived.

Though signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and a centre back wasn't mutually exclusive. We still had plenty left over to sort out our defence. So we should have done both instead of one over the other.

Id also expect him to play in the FA Cup as well.

Think he was touted as a potential target early in the summer but it just seemed to die as all focus went on VVD.
That shouldn't really have been a factor (and would be massively disappointing if true). From what I remember De Vrij was mentioned tenuously after we issued our public apology, but once we got deeper into the window you would have thought we would have looked at him again?

No doubt Southampton surprised many, but surely we should have covered ourselves just in case. If we do get De Vrij on a free next season, the question would remain why we did not do the deal this sumer.

I think we could have done AOC AND got DE Vrij as well. Link to De Vrij may be nonsense, but if not would be interesting as to why the club did not attempt to sign him this summer.

Said this a few weeks ago.

Personally this rotation with the keepers, looks more and more like a public audition for the #1 spot in the future. I think Klopp is still undecided as to the hierachy, (even though Migs is the best right now).

Wouldn't be surprised to see a keeper exit in January or the summer.

Both Karius and Ward are too good to be a number 3 keeper so this is literally the battle to see who can be number two and challenge Mignolet. Step up or step aside essentially.

Yeah, think Klopp is looking to see who has the long-term #1 credentials.

I'm hoping he's looking for long-term #2 credentials with our bunch.

Not a single one of them should be our #1 long-term.

I think Klopp will be looking at the potential of Karius and Ward. TBH I feel for any keeper that plays behind our defence right now.

Like most i don't agree or like this whole keeper situation as i prefer the old fashion way or having a #1 and playing him to get continuity going with his defense etc but in order to break out and win the prem and do well in other comps we clearly have to think differently.

This is what you get with Klopp as he did a similar thing when he was at Dortmund and i can understand why he went with 3 keepers now when we all thought that Ward would at least stay with Huddersfield and get a season on loan in the prem.

We'll see where this policy goes, maybe it'll galvanise all of them and push them to be better.

Its all one big unit though. The defence isn't helped by the lack of command of either goalkeeper although Mignolet has improved in this aspect. For example our defence would be helped a lot more if he had Pepe Reina in his prime constantly barking orders and taking control of situations.

Yeah, you're right. The balance of the midfield is a factor as well.

It all seems so up in the air at the moment, with no settled defence. Matip seems to be the only one who's certain of his place, then perm any other position from 2-3 players:

RB = TAA, Gomez and Clyne (when fit)
LB = Moreno, Robertson or Milner (if needed!)
CB = Lovren, Klavan, possibly Gomez (if gambled)
GK = Mig, Karius or Ward.

Looks like we are trying to either to rotate or experiment to be effective .
