Does the captain have to play by default?

It might appear so under Klopp.

If he's picking him otherwise because he thinks he's consistently one of the best 3 MFs we have, then we're in more serious trouble.

    And that's the bottom line.
Yeah, pretty much. Hendo is too limited, Can is neither settled nor consistent, Coutinho is a mute, and there's really no one else to step up to the job. We have talent but are bereft of genuine leaders. It's an issue.

Perhaps if Lallana was actually fit? I donít know, the squad is very weak

Lallana has already been the on field leader of this team for some time now.

As others have said, he's the best option we have with not a great list of candidates.

I've been advocating for a new Captain recently as I believe Hendo is not up to the job. It was also driven by the emergence of Mane as a natural leader, in my eyes. The guy is a grafter, fearless and wants to win. He's an impeccable character who can lead by example and a good representative for the club. If he's willing to take the responsibility then I think the job should be his.

Fair enough... Maybe it should be rotated or something...

    Just give it to Lallana.

I'm fed up with this discussion.

Lallana or no one we currently have.

Henderson will remain our captain, nothing will change.

Exactly the only way it's going to someone else is if Hendo is sold.

I was saying in the Matip thread how he doesn't seem to be authoritative enough, maybe giving him captaincy would help with this?

Keita could be an option when he's here.

You show leadership material before being made captain, not then itger way around.

I like Joel a lot but his biggest weakness if he has any is he just isn't vocal enough in a position that should is normally where you need those attributes the most so if he isn't that guy organizing the backline I don't see the logic of making him captain if the whole team.

VVD can't get here fast enough.

Just based on my past experience, I've seen the captaincy bring the character out of people.
Its like sometimes people like they need to be given the authority to do it.

I think the bigger problem is that we don't have anyone in the squad that can do what you're saying. It's almost like everyone needs Klopp to shout at them. We are way to soft in this department.

Nah, he'd still be our captain. Klopp is very loyal....

I agree with most we are kind of stuck with Henderson as we have absolutely no leaders in the team. Closest alternative is llalana but he has an annual injury problem.

I thought Klopp was going to be this ruthless no nonsense kind of guy. He looks it, but he ainít, and Hendersonís captaincy proves it in a nutshell. A ruthless manager after his first season would have seen that Henderson is not captain material, and would have changed it, or flipping brought in a leader by now. Every manager needs a general on that pitch. With this current side they flipping deserve two sets of rollickings. Klopp barking from the sidelines ainít enough for these players, they need someone on the pitch firing a rocket upntheir backside too.

    Lallana, Keita, or Mane.

    Lallana.

He has the ability to leave a mark on a game, and where he isnt having the best of times in an attacking sense his fight and determination are still useful.

And from me. The next suggestion is bound to be Emre Can, Mr. Consistency himself, who has so far refused to sign a new contract. Again, now that is a player you'd want to make captain. Deserving of a place in the team because of his consistency and his devotion to the club. Nah, no one would be silly enough to mention him, would they?
