Made a thread for posters to debate or talk about the past. Seems a lot of interest is for it, just that debate keeps on messing up other threads, so lets talk about past managers, their business and line ups, the trophies they won and relive the old years a little!

    Knock yourselves out....

Points gained in the league - with the same number of games I head that Rafa did the worst, klopp second and BR the best - is that correct? If we got an objective actuary to look at that they would tell us that it would be enough games to tell you who was the best....?

Big time. He took over from Bob and it was seamless.

Yep won the European cup and was the last past manager to win it until Rafa.

For some reason Joe has become a past manager we seems to miss out on praise

Unfortunate circumstances for him, would have been good to see him continue. Perhaps he tends to draw less attention and praise because his tenure was so brief, even if brimming with success.

Then again players like Litmanen and McAllister get plenty of praise and they were only here five minutes, but I'm guessing add 10 years to the equation and in that amount of year's time or maybe 5-10 on top of that and maybe they'll fade a little from memory too. It is kind of insulting to Joe that some players made a bit of an impact get more recognition than a manager did a lot in a short time for the club, he was one manager, they were one of 11+ players....

Depending on which one then because one was less than 10 years ago and the other is still around 15 years more recent than Joe (towards the end of his time as manager)

After Souness's two 6th place finishes and an 8th place

    Evans managed
    In the league he finished - 4th - 3rd - 4th - 3rd
    League Cup Winners: 1994–95
    FA Cup runner-up: 1995-96
Lost in the semi final of the old Cup Winners Cup to PSG

Souness still brought the FA cup home though and you didn't mention that?

An attacking manager who could set his side up to defend, Its strange to think and even I sometimes think this way and look back and say that Evans side couldn't defend, and you look at the goals against each season in the league, sometimes better than Man Utds, goals against on average each league season was 33-34.

If only Evans had brought a player like Ince in sooner and a better goalkeeper I think we might have won the league, I felt the Paul Ince signing was too late, Barnes in the middle with Redknapp was holding us back.

Joe Fagan is overlooked because he had such short tenure. But he was extremely successful. Again it is partly because he was manger for a relatively short period but it is said that he has the highest percentage success of what was possible for any top flight English manager.

Treble winner, but marked by the Heysel disaster so its a weird time to remember in a sense

Staggering achievement though considering he'd just taken over from Bob

I also think in 95/96 he dropped Thomas when Redknapp returned from a long lay off through injury

We were not quite as good then, Thomas complimented Barnes far better than Redknapp, we'd gone 20 odd games unbeaten then Redknapp came back into the team and we dipped a little

Roy's problem was he did try to address the defensive issues but the signings were quite poor, Babb for example. I quite liked Scales but then he sold him to Spurs and replaced him with Kvarme who was poor

He was another treble winner as much as his treble was downplayed, so has his own name carved in the clubs history

    2 League Cups
    FA Cup
    UEFA Cup
    Prem League runner up

    We'd kill for that now

The first manager in English football to win a treble. It's overlooked by those that believe football was invented by Sky in 1992. They still believe Baconface was. Joe Fagan had as much a difficult task as Sir Bob did. Whilst Sir Bob succeeded a messiah in Shanks, Joe succeeded a genius in Sir Bob. The seamless transition was incredible.

From what I read his attention to detail was astonishing. Whilst Shanks, Sir Bob and Joe worked together they were a formidable unit. Shanks was the motivator, Sir Bob was the tactical genius whilst Joe was the brains. In fact he was decades ahead of his time due to his intelligence.
