Liverpool owners slap £1BILLION price tag on club as leading financier begins takeover talks

The Reds are wanted by top investor Amanda Staveley, who watched the 1-1 draw at Newcastle from the stands last week

Liverpool’s American owners have slapped a stunning £1billion price tag on the club after preliminary buy-out talks.

Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal that leading financier Amanda Staveley, who has strong links to billionaires in the Middle East, made initial soundings about the club’s availability on Sunday.

Staveley, who runs PCP Capital Partners, a fund with global assets of more than £28billion.

She was at the 1-1 draw between Newcastle and Liverpool on a fact-finding mission - and has made previous attempts to acquire the Mersey giants.

The 44-year-old was involved with Dubai investors in takeover attempts in 2007 which were ultimately aborted, and last year her firm made a joint offer for a share of the club with Chinese company Everbright Limited – but it was rejected by the Reds’ current owners, the Fenway Sports Group.

Staveley was instrumental in Sheikh Mansour’s purchase of Manchester City in 2008 and knows that Liverpool is on the radar of the Middle East billionaires anxious to invest in a leading English club.

But Fenway, who bought the club seven years ago for £300m, are looking for a major return on their investment and will only sell for the right price.

Which Middle Eastern country can FSG sell to? Saudi Arabia? Kuwait?

Yeah true. Can imagine we are an attractive club to buy though. FSG have taken us as far as they can. Their transfer windows have been shocking.

    It doesn't appear so.

If there is a deal going to happen based on Staveley being at St James' Park, it's likely to be Newcastle rather than us.

    Have they?

As for us being attractive at £1bn...I doubt that.

Some say she's there for Newcastle. Some say she's there for us.

    Who say what is true?

Sometimes I wonder why don't these people bought us when we were at our lowest during H&G era.

A billion quid is a lot of money to spend on a football club, that's before you buy a single player.

Dunno why, but I wouldn't find the prospect of a takeover by some middle eastern group to be massively appealing.

We had people trying to flog us for years yet nobody bit at a fraction of the current price being quoted.

No you’re right, remember all those players we nearly signed? Fantastic.

They’ll get over a tenth of that back from Coutinho.

Because a "group" would be buying it as an investment rather than a hobby they'll throw money at a la Abramovich and Monsour so we'd end up with at best a similar mindset towards the club paying its own way. Possibly worse as they may not have the same respect for history/tradition that FSG have or could also start skimming off the club rather than reinvesting any profits. Better the devil you know...

That's what I'm curious about. The only real proposal from Middle East was DIC.

Amanda Staveley was involved in that botched deal too.

She's probably interested in Newcastle. That's where her loyalties lie according to her Wikipedia article.

The opposite would be true if you are buying the club to compete at the top.

I don't want her to be interested in us. Unless of course she's working on behalf of some insanely rich Middle Eastern regime that is willing to dump mountains of money on us, because that's the only way we'll be winning anything.

And that leads to my question earlier. Which Middle East country can FSG sell to?

    Qatar has PSG.

    Dubai has Man City.

Which Middle Eastern country can FSG sell to? Saudi Arabia? Kuwait?

Hopefully Saudi Arabia. The ruling family has over a trillion dollars. That should be enough to buy us at least 10 league titles, 20 FA Cups, 50 League Cups and maybe 5 more European Cups.

😱 imagine change that into coins and both Man City and PSG will be drowned!

I think I remember their prince or whoever used to be interested in buying us. Right?

From what I understood, she was there for Newcastle and Rafa had something to do with it. If it works out for them, Rafa could become a Legend for the barcodes too.

On us: i’d love a Billionaire Arab to take over (not that it’s happening).
