Not sure if there's already a thread for this so here goes.

The Winter Olympics start this weekend.
    Anyone have any favourite events?.
    Mine are:-
    Downhill skiing
    Ski jumping
    Curling
    Ice hockey
    Short track speed skating
That event where about 6 people race eachother down a course on snow boards - cant remember what its called.

I've no interest at all in:-
    Figure skating.
That half-pipe stuff on snowboards where they do the acrobatics etc.

Never quite get into this though the odd event I quite like, Ice Hockey I quite like watching and that bobsleigh looks fun and lethal if it goes wrong

All the skiing - SG and Downhill the most. Be interesting to see the battle between Vonn and Goggia for the women's DH.
Shiffrin should take the slalom, but the others are fairly wide open I think.

Bobsleigh - although I think it's a battle between the German teams for both men and women.

Skeleton - again, the Germans have a chance at a sweep on the women's side.

Hockey - Will US women finally get gold ... I'm thinking not likely.

    Curling

Biathlon - cross country skiing and shooting ?

The Snowboard races - whatever they are.

Other than hockey and curling - if it's outside I'll probably watch it .. if it's inside, I'll skip it.

I prefer the winter Olympics to the summer ones actually. Will hopefully catch quite a bit of this.

The Bermudans came out as they normally do in Bermudan shorts only to be eclipsed by the Tongan cross country skier. (Same person as Rio 16)

Yes just watched that, pretty exciting really. Commentators on Eurosport get well into it. Big shock though. Have to feel for the Italian in 4th, 0.002 seconds slower than 3rd was it?

You'd think they'd make them all use the same equipment though as it's the olympics. Commentators bemoaning that countries that spend most on sled technology do the best.

Also Red Gerard winning the snowboard slope style! Should have put a 10er on the young American.

Canada just took Switzerland apart in the curling mixed doubles. Have to be the favourites to take gold in all 3 curling events.

Just seen the vid of Elise Christie crashing out of the 500m short track skating.
How the hell can the judges rule she fell over by herself?. The skater coming on the inside almost ran over her hand.
    Dreadful decision.

I don't understand the rules and regulations for this, referees have all the relevant information at hand.
Clearly Elise had the inside line and right of way.

It's a complete lottery the 500m completely unfair.

Agreed re short track after all this win at SLC 2002 by Aussie's Steve Bradbury is a prime example of why the form book can be shredded.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tYUjmEH9NNk

Ozzyman reviews (funny but language is not family friendly) paints it as a stroke of strategic genius to which Steve indicates was part of his thinking. As he stated he was the 8th fastest in the field on day 1 so why be in the thick of the action where he is likely to finish out of the medals. Accept that as a given stay back and hope at least two find their way to the sides where he can profit from their misfortune.

It's a shame that the NHL guys aren't allowed to play in the Olympics but it should mean that Canada will be under threat by some of the European teams.

We have someone in fourth in the bob skeleton or throwing yourself down an ice chute on a tea tray. He is only 0.03 behind Bronze although the gold is going to the Koreans unless Yun Sung-Bin crashes out.

Although I forgot that once again we cheated through our research to produce the suits the competitors are using.

Parsons confirmed as Bronze medallist mainly due to his mistake was minor when compared to the Latvian's (Dukurs) who went from 2nd to 4th. The Russian's clean slide gave him silver.

Is there any other sport that sees more recourse to video replays and then disqualifications as speed skating? Just about every race is subject to some sort of scrutiny afterwards.

Feel for Elise Christie as well, poor lass just can't buy an olympic medal.

Doubt it, such a small area to race in there are bound to be lots of contact. The Ski and Snowboarding races have a few disqualifications but not as many as speed skating.

Looked a heavy crash for Christie but I think the injury might be the other skaters skate hitting her ankle that might be the problem.

Good bronze for Isabel Atkin earlier in Ski Slopestyle. Not sure that was expected.

Skeleton final run coming up soon, great chance for two medals for Yarnold and Deas, 2nd and 4th currently. Yarnold only 0.02 behind.

So... have been enjoying the WO - however, there is some theme music which I feel is brainwashing me into believing there are only 4 notes on any musical instrument.

I'm a downhill skier myself - but whereas it takes these athletes two minutes to get down a slope - I'm stuck at 20!!! As for ski jumping - don't even go there!!!

She's really pretty! Reminds me of an Italian actress called Ornella Muti. Loving the curling- men with brooms - what's not to like!

Yes watched the mens when one rider broke his neck, loads of crashes in that. High number of Winter events you have to be slightly crazy to do them.

There's certainly more "extreme" events in the winter games than the summer ones, but still prefer the summer games overall, even many events in them games I don't bother with, still enjoyed what I've seen in these games though
