A few Nigerian sources say that Jurgen Klopp is looking at Wilfred Ndidi as a holding midfielder this summer.

The price would be around £50m or so for the 21-year-old who has impressed in his two years at Leicester City.

Liverpool to break the bank for Ndidi in June

Liverpool are ready to break the bank for the Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as coach Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his midfield next summer. Klopp has a number of decent options but none who are naturally defensive. Captain Jordan Henderson Gini Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are more attack-minded while James Milner and Emre Can who have strong defensive abilities can’t be relied upon in the long term.

The former is 32-year-old already while the latter can go on a free transfer at the end of the season. Ndidi has been a mainstay in the Foxes’ midfield and has impressed in his first season in the English Premier League. He arrived from Belgian side Genk last winter to fill gap left by Ngolo Kante in 2016. At just 21-years-old he is developing into a dominate force in the anchor role at the King Power stadium. According to reports in England which was monitored by our correspondent, Klopp views Ndidi as an excellent addition who offers something that no-one else at the club can do.

The German reportedly believes the Nigerian can give Liverpool that midfield protection they haven’t had since Javier Mascherano left in 2010. Ndidi who is adjudged the best tackler in the EPL this term so far, is valued at about $75million and Liverpool are ready to splash the cash on him. However, former Super Eagles midfielder Etim Esin believes his compatriot can break into the Red’s starting line up without much fuss considering his talent. He said it would be a good move for Ndidi if he eventually sealed the transfer to Merseyside.

He said: “I can’t remember the last time we had a Nigerian in Liverpool apart from Victor Moses’ brief stint there. This is going to be a fantastic move for him and I think his transfer fee is likely going to go up because it could happen shortly after the World Cup.

“Ndidi has been doing well at Leicester; he is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the EPL now and should command that kind of transfer. I don’t think he will struggle at Liverpool, he is a player made for big club like that and with the role he plays, there is no way he will be sitting on the bench there. He’s certainly not going to be like Kelechi iheanacho who moved to Leicester to become an option to Jamie Vardy; I see Ndidi walking straight into that Liverpool’s side.”

So, if there is any truth to the story, is Wilfred Ndidi the right player for us?

That'd be an appalling waste of 50 mil.

I like what I’ve seen, not sure he’s worth 50 million, but if klopp wants him do what it takes considering we desperately need a real dm. Get him and someone to replace cous creativity along with Keita as box to box and our starting mid is transformed into something much better. This summer is huge.

Its a hell of a lot of money.

If he was available for around £30m or so then that would be a very good buy indeed. He has pretty much out performed N'Golo Kante this season and the stats back that up.

Plus he has only turned 21 so JK could pretty much mould him into a top class defensive midfielder if he wanted to.

I think people need to start accepting that £50m isn't big money anymore.

Agree, we paid 40m for a player who can't nail down a first team spot in midfield (I rate Ox don't get me wrong) then you look at some of the prices Chelsea have paid for their garbage. I'd like to see Ndidi here, the fee is irrelevant if we have the money.

That article has all the hallmarks of Ndidi's agent starting on a fishing trip.

From what's been seen of him this lad hasn't really shown that he's better or even as good as what we currently have available as #6 in the squad and the talk of £50m someone's definitely having a laugh.

We need one but would be grateful if anyone can point to the slightest indication of evidence that Klopp intends to buy a #6 let alone spend £50m on one.

I championed him in a thread a while ago and a lot of people didn't seem keen. He's stats at breaking up play and tackling speaks for itself. He will be a great signing though it seems that Klopp doesn't want an out and out defensive midfielder.

We have a certain amount. I wouldn't be spending £50m of it on him.

On this seasons form I don't think there are any better DM's we could buy from the PL.

Probably in the top 3 this season, top 5 easily.

I think Klopp likes players with a bit of PL experience so if he is available I see him going for him before looking abroad.

He definitely isn't a bad player and he is a "true" DM. I'm not against it if the price is right

At the end of the day if he's the one we've identified to solve our lack of ball winning in midfield then he's worth £50m.

Stats, as we all know, don't tell the whole story. For starters, as a DM, you are going to be much the busier player in that Leicester team than in Chelsea's, so obviously more tackles, blocks and clearances

Julian Weigl would be my first choice for that position although the likelihood of getting him would be zilch
